This was an incredibly engaging intellectual history. I had no idea who Merze Tate was. The details of her work and the other Black women scholars who are mentioned in the book opened a whole different world of interest for me!

I had always read about Nella Larsen and her book, Passing, but I had never read it - until now. When I heard there was going to be a netflix movie, I said I better read it, so I can decide how well (or not) they portrayed Larsen's work. Well the film comes out Wednesday, and it better be good. This was an incredible novel with well-developed and complicated characters. There was great depth to this book. It shifted the focus from someone who just wanted to be white, to a broader understanding of black and white racial dynamics in America, and exposed the complexities of black upper middle class life.

This is not just a story about Angelou's life and her relationship with her mother. It is a story that all of us can learn from - a story of second chances, a story of how to support your child when the world would have given up on them, and how to sustain yourself as a woman.

I loved it. the character development and plot twists were amazing. It left me wondering how did any human being manage to create and write such stories, regularly. I love Butler!

Octavia Butler does it again. The character development was excellent. I love the way she manages to blend sci-fi and Christianity. Genius!
