Historia
John Carter, an American Civil War veteran, goes prospecting in Arizona and, when set upon by Indians, is mysteriously transported to Mars, called "Barsoom" by its inhabitants. Carter finds that he has demigod-like strength on this planet, due to its lesser gravity. He is soon captured by "Tharks", the planet's warlike, four-armed, green inhabitants, and his incredible adventures begin.

Classic pulp sci-fi ruined by the second worst narrator on Audible (First worst is unimportant here).
There are a number of expertly-narrated versions of this Burroughs series on Audible - go get one of those.

Historia
John Perry did two things on his 75th birthday. First he visited his wife's grave. Then he joined the army. The good news is that humanity finally made it into interstellar space. The bad news is that planets fit to live on are scarce—and alien races willing to fight us for them are common. So: we fight. To defend Earth, and to stake our own claim to planetary real estate. Far from Earth, the war has been going on for decades: brutal, bloody, unyielding. Earth itself is a backwater.

The triology was awesome, this book was not.
Revisado: 02-26-15
Love the first three books in this series (you should go get them now), and I really (REALLY) wanted to see how the Prince would use his new found maturity back home, but somehow Weber and Ringo lost it with this one. This whole book, especially the last half, feels like a terrible mistake.
If you loved the trilogy, skip book 4. You'll lead a happier and less disappointing existence.

Historia
For a thousand years the ash fell and no flowers bloomed. For a thousand years the Skaa slaved in misery and lived in fear. For a thousand years the Lord Ruler, the "Sliver of Infinity," reigned with absolute power and ultimate terror, divinely invincible. Then, when hope was so long lost that not even its memory remained, a terribly scarred, heart-broken half-Skaa rediscovered it in the depths of the Lord Ruler's most hellish prison.

Vin paused, and so will I.
Revisado: 02-26-15
Great premise and really interesting magic system, but it's hobbled by unimaginative, repetitive prose and a mildly transparent plot. Michael Kramer gets high marks for flowing though it all.
Honestly, I think if Sanderson's editor had just removed every instance of the phrase "(so-and-so), paused", the entire book would be half as long and twice as entertaining.
Still, while I didn't exactly hate it, I'm pausing after this book.

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

Science! ...also by far the best narration ever.
Revisado: 06-18-13
Great use of actual science as a tool for survival in a very realistic (and for that reason, realistically scary) situation.
The writing is excellent, the characters are compelling, the math is actually part of the fun, and best of all -- the narrator absolutely NAILS it.
This is by far the best match-up of narrator and story I have heard on Audible, ever.

Well written but ultimately shallow Y.A. novel
Revisado: 06-18-13
Part of larger series that starts to feel aimless after the half-way point.
Characters are the rather 2 dimensional (sometimes only one) type found in a lot of young adult sci-fi / adventure stories.
In the end this book just sort of fizzles with little resolved. When will modern authors realize that even though they are writing for a series, any given installment needs it's own complete story arch? It's not enough to just stop writing with an implied "to be continued" after a certain number of chapters.
I'm not bothering with the rest of the series.

Historia
Written with bracing wit and intelligence, Rachel Maddow's Drift argues that we've drifted away from America's original ideals and become a nation weirdly at peace with perpetual war, with all the financial and human costs that entails. To understand how we've arrived at such a dangerous place, Maddow takes us from the Vietnam War to today's war in Afghanistan.

Any additional comments?
This is a very even-handed, step-by-step evaluation of recent American military and political history. Not at all snarky or cynical. It should be assigned as a college freshman-level civics textbook. It would be a damned compelling, and at times entertaining, one at that.

Historia
The year is 2380. The Intersolar Commonwealth, a sphere of stars some 400 light-years in diameter, contains more than 600 worlds, interconnected by a web of transport "tunnels" known as wormholes. At the farthest edge of the Commonwealth, astronomer Dudley Bose observes the impossible: Over 1,000 light-years away, a star...vanishes. It does not go supernova. It does not collapse into a black hole. It simply disappears.

Epic Dissapointment
Revisado: 08-17-12
Would you try another book from Peter F. Hamilton and/or John Lee?
no
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment
Any additional comments?
This proves once again that just because a book is overlong, that doesn't make it epic.
This story is just a tedious 37 hour grind, mostly filled with subplots that don't really go anywhere, way too many characters that are hard to care about, and uninteresting political jockeying (since the characters are wooden, so are their politics). The story could have been half as long to make it twice as compelling, but the plot doesn't really resolve, and the author just kind of stops writing. So in the end, what's the point?
As one subplot winds up, one of the characters yells in frustration, "You've got to be F*ing kidding me!". That's how I felt. Very disappointed. It's like the author is playing a joke. Then I searched audible to see if I had missed downloading the last chapters. But nope. This is all there is. Oh well.
I did like the alien aggressor point of view sub story, but that isn't introduced until about 2/3rds of the way in. It would have made a nice short story by itself. Toss the rest. That's about it.
The Narrator isn't as bad as everyone says and I didn't hear the volume changes everyone is complaining about. Sometimes you can tell when he is picking up a new take with different mic placement. Whatever. The producers could have paced his pauses between subplots better, sometimes it was hard to tell when the subject or setting had changed. Honestly, though, these are niggling details compared to how bad the actual story is.
If there is a sequel (there has to be since nothing is resolved at the end of this monstrosity), I don't even care. I'd rather just forget the 37 hours I spent with this tedious drivel.
