it wasn't bad
Revisado: 12-22-23
So I like Jonathan Mayberry's books. so much so I have noticed something. The knife fight in this book is extremely similar to the scene in "Dragon Factory". The second novel in the Joe ledger series.

Great display of talent from multiple authors
Revisado: 04-13-23
I personally enjoy the monster hunter series and this is a great addition. Then you add the fact multiple authors got involved. If you're like me, it's hard to find new books to listen to. This will help you get a good idea on which author's material to try next.

Historia
When Mouse’s dad asks her to clean out her dead grandmother's house, she says yes. After all, how bad could it be? Answer: pretty bad. Grandma was a hoarder, and her house is stuffed with useless rubbish. That would be horrific enough, but there’s more - Mouse stumbles across her step-grandfather’s journal, which at first seems to be filled with nonsensical rants...until Mouse encounters some of the terrifying things he described for herself.

Unlikeable main character
Revisado: 03-25-23
Main character is very hard to like. Like a person who says, "no offense, but..." then goes on to insult you. She indicates she doesn't judge, then promptly judges people.
She seems to believe that even the most mundane mention or description of a person who is not Caucasian is racist in nature. She, herself, is dumb as a box of rocks but often. speaks poorly of more rural people.
The twists and turns surprise only her, the reader catches on within the first hour or so and can only grit their teeth waiting for the nitwit to catch up.
This would all be fine if it were central to the plot.
It is not.
It is just annoying and unnecessary.
Aside from that, it is well written. Descriptive, really nice word usage and perfectly paced.
Narration is everything in an audio book, while some have not found Ms. Huber to their liking, I found her pleasant to listen to.

I tried not to compare this Dresden. I missed a lot the first time listening to this. so after the second time, I picked up more of the story. Pretty good. I thought the plot was pretty straight forward and was pleasantly surprised with some of the twist involved.

Historia
When the end finally occurred, everything about it was cinematic. The dead came back and ate people, civilization collapsed, and no one could do a thing. But Cyrus V. Sinclair couldn’t care less; he’s a sociopath. Amidst the chaos, Cyrus sits back and contemplates the gore stained streets and screams of his fellow man with little more emotion than one of the walking corpses. With his cache of guns and MREs, he rather likes the idea of hunkering down in his Seattle apartment while the world ends outside.

Historia
It was a day like any other. Except it was our last.... It’s on this day that Pounce discovers that he is, in fact, disposable. Pounce, a styilsh "nannybot" fashioned in the shape of a plush anthropomorphic tiger, has just found a box in the attic. His box. The box he'd arrived in when he was purchased years earlier, and the box in which he'll be discarded when his human charge, eight-year-old Ezra Reinhart, no longer needs a nanny. As Pounce ponders his suddenly uncertain future, the pieces are falling into place for a robot revolution that will eradicate humankind.

Political, woke nonsense.
Revisado: 10-19-21
I tried, I really tried to get through this, thinking that perhaps the political shots, the insulting generalizations would be just a passing mention. But no, they just kept coming, getting more apparent and ridiculous with each chapter.
Thinking it was just me, I ran through some of the other reviews.
Nope, Not just me.
So if you are a huge fan of woke, liberal culture that embraces the fine works of Antifa and other domestic terrorists, THIS is the book for you!
The story is slow and clumsy, the concept is good though.
The narration isn't really great but definitely on par with the writing. I don't know why the narrator thinks that is what an AI tiger would sound like but it would appear to be a bit of a Poohbear complex.
I'm sad that I can't get the time I listened to this back, that it is gone forever, but happy to have had a very short experience to avoid anything else by this author.

Historia
Miah Gray is a 27-year-old former army soldier living in rural New Hampshire with his sister, mother, and her boyfriend. He is plagued by PTSD, finding solace, but not redemption, with the aid of prescribed cannabis. All he wants to do is get high, relax with a good sandwich, and watch a meteor shower with his neighborhood crush, Jen. When the sun's light is blotted out the following morning and the world is plunged into darkness, Miah finds himself locked down with his family, covering windows with trash bags, lighting candles, and following the arcane rules of an ancient prophecy.

You won't regret this buy! Fast and mostly fun!
Revisado: 10-18-21
Time flew by with this audiobook. The story is paced just right, weaving in present and past experiences nearly flawlessly. The humor is stand out and turns what could have been a really intense, dark book into a fun frolic through a death ridden landscape.
I appreciate the light touch on seriously deep issues and the author's restraint on dragging every last emotional response from his readers. I feel he has the talent to drag us into the abyss of PTSD with him but opted instead to take us on a fun rollercoaster ride with a stoner who has no memory of why he is wearing his kid sister's yellow plaid skirt.
The narrator, RC Bray.
Well, his name is review enough, you just can't get much better in audio...well, if he were paired with Amanda Ronconi narrating a Molly Harper book, that would probably be epic, but he is pretty epic by himself also.
This is one book that I'll probably keep on hand to repeatedly listen to on long road trips.
Great job!

Cringeworthy young adult books.
Revisado: 06-27-21
I didn't understand that this was a young adult novel until halfway into the first book.
Viewing it from the perspective of a very young and hormonally emotional teen helps to understand why the characters are completely unlikeable and unbelievable.
None of the characters actually behave in a way that average adults would behave in any situation, much less an emergency.
They are shallow stereo-types throughout the 19 hours and 34 minutes it takes to listen to this box set.
The premise is interesting but the details are not researched thoroughly. You don't just walk into a gun show and purchase a machine gun to avoid federal law, it doesn't work that way. Also, if you put a vehicle in reverse and it makes a horrendous noise, you should probably look under the vehicle rather than under the hood first, though I admit to not being a mechanic.
Bringing the real life Waco tragedy into her fictional book full of nonsense was cringeworthy. Those were real people, real children who perished in the most obscene way possible. Connecting them to a fictional, young adult, short story in a hugely slanted and biased manner is shameful.
As I listened, I thought, "well, at least the author isn't trying to push a ridiculous romance with the main characters into this mess".
And then she did.
Well, she is heading that way toward the end of book 3 at any rate.
As the whole thing came to an end, all 19 hours and 34 minutes of it, I realized that the author did not explain what happened the night of the cut throat, which might actually explain some of this disaster of a book, help bring some meaning or context to it. I just can't bring myself to listen to books 4, 5, 6 or 26 in hopes of getting the story. I'm old with a heart condition, I just don't have that kind of time or patience.
Perhaps it was meant to be a cliffhanger?
I just found it sloppy and inconsiderate.
Have you ever read those old paper book romance books, the ones that were about an inch thick with no real story, a ton of miscommunication and emotional turmoil in them? In the end, everything is explained as a huge misunderstanding and everyone lives happily ever after. Now change the plot from overused romance to overused apocalypse, then tear what little there is in half and you have this series. What is left is 19 hours and 34 minutes of "what was that all about".
I'd like to say that I was given a free copy of this book to review, but alas, I actually paid for this train wreck.
On a happy note, the narrator did a great job.
