Historia
In this must-listen book for anyone striving to succeed, pioneering psychologist Angela Duckworth shows parents, educators, students, and businesspeople - both seasoned and new - that the secret to outstanding achievement is not talent but a focused persistence called "grit". Why do some people succeed and others fail? Sharing new insights from her landmark research on grit, MacArthur "genius" Angela Duckworth explains why talent is hardly a guarantor of success.

Worth reading and rereading
Revisado: 05-19-24
Duckworth’s exploration of passion and perseverance (including the crippling shame and disappointment that can accompany not having it) is well-researched, well-delivered, and in a word, inspiring. I’ve gone through it now at least 5 times in the several years since I first got it, and I know I will go through it again.

In Who We Are and How We Got Here, Reich allows listeners to discover how the human genome provides not only all the information a human embryo needs to develop but also the hidden story of our species.

The work here is highly technical, yet Reich does a good job of simplifying without oversimplifying.

Historia
Black Americans have long been shackled to the Democrats. Seeing no viable alternative, they have watched liberal politicians take the Black vote for granted without pledging anything in return. In Blackout, Owens argues that this automatic allegiance is both illogical and unearned. She contends that the Democrat Party has a long history of racism and exposes the ideals that hinder the Black community’s ability to rise above poverty, live independent and successful lives, and be an active part of the American dream.

Timely and Timeless
Revisado: 11-24-22
In 2020, with the death of George Floyd and the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement, I resolved to myself that I (a white male) would learn more about the black experience in the United States.
Though I wouldn’t know it for several years, this book belongs on that list.
Candace Owens speaks bravely and articulately, and she is worth listening to.

Historia
Once described by Mao Zedong as a "needle inside a ball of cotton", Deng was the pragmatic yet disciplined driving force behind China's radical transformation in the late 20th century. He confronted the damage wrought by the Cultural Revolution, dissolved Mao's cult of personality, and loosened the policies that had stunted China's growth. Obsessed with modernization, Deng opened trade relations with the West, which lifted hundreds of millions out of poverty. Yet he also answered to his authoritarian roots, most notably when he ordered the crackdown in 1989 at Tiananmen Square.

Revisado: 11-08-22
Vogel provides a soul-crushingly thorough examination of a lifelong Chinese Communist Party member.
Amidst breathless admiration for the Party (whether lifted from Party documents or editorialized), Vogel disabuses the listener of the notion that Deng is the Chinese Ronald Reagan.

Historia
Everything in law and politics, including individual rights, comes back to divisions of power and the evergreen question: Who decides? Who wins the disputes of the day often turns on who decides them. And our acceptance of the resolution of those disputes often turns on who the decision maker is—because it reveals who governs us. Who Decides makes the case that Constitutional Law should account for the role of the state courts and constitutions, together with the federal courts and constitution, in assessing the right balance of power among all branches of government.

Insightful and Pioneering

I have not found many books on the topic of how the Federal and State governments actually relate to each other in practice.
If you find this topic interesting, you will find that this book has insights to share with you.

King's rich and passionate style of delivery will transport you back to the era of the civil-rights movement, when King advocated non-violent resistance in the pursuit of equality and dignity not only for blacks but for all mankind. Seldom has any leader since inspired and captivated an audience worldwide and motivated a nation to action.

Some Wonderful Speeches
Revisado: 06-25-22
This collection is worth your time. It contains some beautiful and moving speeches by MLK.
That said, it is not an authoritative collection. There is a great deal of overlap in the chosen recordings, and many of MLK’s speeches either were not recorded or are for whatever reason not included in this collection.
Consider this collection a great way to learn more about MLK, but keep learning elsewhere.

Excellent work; less-than-excellent audio
Revisado: 03-05-22
This is another worthwhile work by Thomas Sowell, and it is well-narrated in this audiobook.
However, the quality of the recording itself is not very high; throughout it sounds muffled, and occasionally plosives (p sound, t sound, etc.) result in a brief gap in the audio itself.
Due to this, you may find yourself struggling to actually hear this work.

Milton Friedman and his wife, Rose, teamed up to write this most convincing and readable guide, which illustrates the crucial link between Adam Smith's capitalism and the free society. They show how freedom has been eroded and prosperity undermined through the rapid growth of governmental agencies, laws, and regulations.

Historia
There was no single, dramatic event that set the current financial crisis off. A whole series of very questionable decisions by many people, in many places, over a period of years, built up the pressures that led to a sudden collapse of the housing market and of financial institutions that began to fall like dominoes as a result of investing in securities based on housing prices. This book is designed to unravel the tangled threads of that story.

Revisado: 12-07-20
This work is the only one I have encountered in which the role of the Federal Government’s well-intentioned but short-sighted policies are examined thoroughly, lucidly, and convincingly.
If you are interested in a full and frank discussion of the Housing Crisis and its ensuing economic recession, then I encourage you to listen to this audiobook.
