There's something about a writer who understands audiobooks and a narrator who understands writing creating their own work. Tanya's writing is so earnest and open, vividly rendered and realized. I'm a masculine person in my 20s and found myself sitting in both her agony and love, all the complications of the world she's sharing. This was possible both because of the writing and because of the beautiful performance: the excellent boys & men's voices, the truthful anxiety and anticipation in Tanya's voice. This novel is a treasure, and so was this audiobook. It's hard to listen to something like this and think "this wasn't sculpted fiction. from text to voice this was just a lived truth." Thank you for sharing this story, and for sharing it so well. A gorgeous memoir & audiobook I'll be thinking about for a while to come.

This children's book is a cute story of two sisters, and I loved the narrators energetic and thoughtful performance. She embodied the fun and care woven throughout the story wonderfully!

I was at the edge of my seat the entire team. The unfolding structure of the story builds so much intrigue and tension right from the first chapter, and I was so mesmerized by Ray Porter's performance. I absolutely love science fiction, and this story took me on a journey through not only all the science but also the inventions and revelations, challenges and choices. And I could swear this was recorded by Grace himself, the performance is so conversational and absolutely alive. What an unreal combination. Winner for Audiobook of the year makes total sense.

This title is a hard look at gender and power, and explores the nuances of how women navigate the torrential downpour of misogyny in the workplace, or just survive if navigation isn't possible. Stephanie Nemeth-Parker makes this experience so absorbable with an excellent performance throughout that felt both seasoned and honest. I can see how this landed her a nomination for best female narrator of the year! This title deals extensively with sexual assault, and I'd urge listeners to keep that in mind. For me, this audiobook was an exploration of what it means for us to be responsible, or for something to be inevitable. Great listen, and can't wait to hear more from this narrator.

A New Tone in this Series - And It Works Well

When I listened to the first book in this series, it was wide and ambitious. This one is ambitious in its humanity, focusing on mostly one place with one group and untangling some more of the human implications of this future world Tapper has created.

Even though it's a new vibe, I still appreciated the storytelling, loved settling in with a handful of characters as they explored their dynamics and made choices. As always, Stacey Lind made that possible, blending a variety of accents and character choices to spin a clear cast. What I loved was getting to hear how focused writing made for focused emotional performances, and the opening chapter is a particularly strong one from the Tapper/Lind duo.

In the end, I do think I liked the story of the first book more, but I feel like I'm a regular and will show back up for future installations of this series with this author writer duo. I'm pumped to learn what the epilogue could mean for this world and all the characters yet to come into it!

Not only is this book a home run, but Billie Fulford-Brown's narration is real, grounded, an absolute sensation of a performance. One of my favorite audiobooks this year.

I'm a sucker for a story told across space and time. The convolution here is wonderful - a futuristic setting, religious radicalism, a secret government plot, and the individual people—all painfully human—who make the story happen. Tapper has created an extremely intriguing world here and delivered the variety and uniqueness to give it life.

That being said, the star of the show here was Stacey Lind. You could not tell from her performance that this is an early audiobook of hers. She shows her seasoned skills as an actress as she performed across age, across gender, introduces a full world of accents, creates moments of intimacy and intrigue, moments of action and violence. Her narration is honest and conversational, and she felt right at home in my ear throughout the entire book. I will be looking forward to more of her narration, and can't wait to see this author and narrator pair up again for the sequel.

Great listen overall, charged through it in a few days and had me connecting the dots and waiting for the story to unfold.

There isn't any surprise with what the author is trying to achieve - I don't think he hides it and it's made clear by the content warnings at the onset of the book. Even so, I felt present with Virgil all throughout: the way his trauma is explored worked well for the story and was performed excellently by Kevin R. Free. The narrative isn't one full of action at every step: the exposition, the experiences, and the confusion that build up to the finale felt well delivered. I wasn't waiting for any kind of explosive reveal, and I think Shaun David Hutchinson crafted a story where that wasn't necessary. This read like great literary fiction in a YA setting, and Kevin R. Free deftly brought the characters to life and performed the post-traumatic asides woven throughout the book so well. I appreciate a story that shows itself to be fully human, and differentiates between deserved and underserved forgiveness.

Amy Kennedy's performance is so smoky and strong throughout this audiobook. S.J. Hartsfield has created an engaging dynamic that Amy delivers on excellently.

The combination of highly intentional, shocking, and engaging writing alongside an inspired, provoking, and fully embodied narration really makes this audiobook a home run. The scenes throughout are truly heavy, but Lilac's journey had me pulling along the whole way. Ivy Tara Blair takes us in starting right with her delivery of the opening sentence, and drives us home (all the way to the gas station in the final scene). I'll be remembering this one in my head for a while, perhaps as loudly as the sound of a fire burning.
