I don't like the whispering. I wish the narrator had just spoken in a calm tone of voice. I couldn't listen for more than a couple of minutes.

Now, I was listening to this with my 4 kids ages 2-10. Maybe for an older crowd it would be more appropriate. But my objection is that the kids are lying to parents, breaking in to places, etc in the name of justice. It's a "ends justify the means" theme that was prevalent thought the whole book. Also, the word crap is used several times.
My kids enjoyed it, but we won't be relistening.

Every one of my four kiddos loved this listen! My 1.5 old would repeat words like Hooray! or Hi, etc and even my ten year old said he "didn't mind if we wanted to listen to it" which in preteen means he likes it! My middles and I sing along to the songs and find ourselves singing them throughout the day. I thought the concept of a song and story kitchen was clever, and Laurie and Thallonius have darling voices that were a pleasure to listen to. I can't wait until another of her works comes out!

This review is for the audio version. One-Two, Kill a Few is the first in a new series by John Achor. It’s light, entertaining and the mystery is well plotted. I didn’t really warm up to the protagonist, Casey Fremont, but the story was interesting enough to keep me listening. She felt shallow to me. For example, when a body falls from the 10th floor to land a few feet from her, she’s more interested in the “hot” guy who knocks her out of the way than the dead man. Then the police show up and the detective is also very “hot”. I don’t remember the exact words, but as she walks away she’s thinking how she’s just met two hot guys who are both interested in her and how, except for the dead man, her day is getting better and better. I liked her new roommates and the relationship growing between the three of them.
The mystery in the book was good enough for me to try the second in the series, in hopes that the characters are more fully developed. The narrator, Aisling Gray, did a great job differentiating between the characters and her voice is easy to listen to. This audiobook was given by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review via Audiobook Boom.

Although this is the 9th in the series, it does well as a stand alone. I thought the mystery was well written, but the various relationships in the story were also part of the overall pleasure of this book. Even the characters who only had cameo appearances in Deborah's courtroom are...characters. I felt drawn into the story, and was sorry when I finished it. I'm eager to listen to the next one.
Re the narrator: I was somewhat dubious about listening to C J Critt read a story set in North Carolina, having heard her read several Stephanie Plum novels which require a very different accent. I needn't have worried. There was nothing about her reading which reminded me of any other series.

I was disappointed because I didn't realize until after I had bought it, that this is a reading of the newest gender-neutral translation. Many people will prefer this translation, but I have always liked the NIV because it was translated from original text as much as possible. Now that it has been changed to become gender-neutral, I feel like the publishers have opted for political correctness over accuracy.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I really enjoyed the 1st book in this series, but was disappointed in this one. The relationships between the characters lacked the charm and humor found in the 1st book. I would have still given it a better rating, though, if it hadn't been for the ending. For me, the ending ruined any pleasure I had gotten from the book.

My least favorite Paul Temple

I have listened to several Paul Temple audiobooks, both performances and books, and this is my least favorite so far. It was depressing, with pointless suicides & murders. I wish I had not spent the credit on it.

Even though this is not my favorite Arcane novel, nor my favorite reader, I still liked it. Strong female lead & strong male lead who join to battle the baddies. I will always be willing to spend a credit on Amanda Quick.
