Historia
September is a girl who longs for adventure. When she is invited to Fairyland by a Green Wind and a Leopard, well, of course she accepts. (Mightn’t you?) But Fairyland is in turmoil, and it will take one 12-year-old girl, a book-loving dragon, and a strange and almost human boy named Saturday to vanquish an evil Marquess and restore order.

Fantastic and fun
Revisado: 10-17-14
Dear Catherynne M Valente,
I really meant to spend my credit on a more serious, grown-up type book this month. Thankfully, your wonderful book promised so much fun and silliness that it brought me right to my senses. What a great story with such charming characters (narrator included)! I'm hooked.

A total crowd pleaser
Revisado: 03-24-13
This audiobook is road trip tested and approved. It's a wonderful, modern fantasy that has something in it for everyone. I listened to it on a trip with three friends who have very diverse interests and we all thoroughly enjoyed this one. I don't know why other reviewers are so bent out of shape about some of the more 'deus ex machina' parts of the story. It's a fairy tale, guys. Such plot devices are part and parcel for the genre.
An additional note, Orson Scott Card describes the mindset of a graduate student brilliantly in this work. If you want to know what life as a grad student is like, this book is a great place to start.

Historia
In this Hugo-winner from Connie Willis, when too many jumps back to 1940 leave 21st century Oxford history student Ned Henry exhausted, a relaxing trip to Victorian England seems the perfect solution. But complexities like recalcitrant rowboats, missing cats, and love at first sight make Ned's holiday anything but restful - to say nothing of the way hideous pieces of Victorian art can jeopardize the entire course of history.

Sci Fi + Victorian England = Awesome
Revisado: 03-24-13
I love this book. I love the characters. I love the complicated and twisting plotlines. I love all of the literary illusions. I even love the fact that the main character's primary motivation involves finding a hideous piece of Victorian knickknack-ery.
I love it so much that I turned it on during a car trip thinking it would go over well with everyone. It didn't - 3 out of the 4 people in the car couldn't get past the voices Steven Crossley gives to the Victorian female characters. Ah, well. It's really too bad that they hate fun so much!

Historia
People start dropping dead around Charlie, giant ravens perch on his building, and it seems that everywhere he goes, a dark presence whispers to him from under the streets. Strange names start appearing on his nightstand notepad, and before he knows it, those people end up dead, too. Yup, it seems that Charlie Asher has been recruited for a new job, an unpleasant but utterly necessary one: Death.

Why so racist?
Revisado: 08-03-12
Wow. I guess Christopher Moore hates Asian people. Seriously folks, I haven't been this uncomfortable since I watched Mickey Rooney portray a Japanese guy in Breakfast at Tiffany's. It's that bad. In terms of horrible Asian stereotypes, the gang is all here in this book. There's a Chinese grandma who will cook and eat anything, including dead pets. There's a guy who runs an illegal fireworks shop in the back of his dry cleaning shop (a twofer, if you will). This same character's youngest granddaughter is named Cindy Lu Hu (just couldn't help yourself, could you, Moore?). Oh, and don't worry, there's a long, cringe-worthy scene at an Asian massage parlor. The list goes on, but you get the idea.
In short, don't give this racist jerk your time and money.

Okada retreats to a deep well in a nearby house. And the story unfolds.

*exasperated sigh*
Revisado: 01-12-12
I recognize that is a work of great literary merit, but here's the thing - I rely on my audiobooks to keep me awake and entertained on my commute or when I'm walking the dog in the wee hours of the morning. So in retrospect, maybe downloading such a character-driven book was setting myself up for failure, but I just couldn't finish the blankedy-blank thing. I found myself so frustrated with the main character and all of his "Bartleby the Scrivener"-type ways. I also found myself wanting to punch him in the face for the amount of time he spent wondering if his wife were on her period. I hate to leave books unfinished and tried to stick it out. But in the end, the thought of continuing on with this one just made me start avoiding my iPod, so I had to call it quits.
I'd have to agree with other reviewers who noted that the narrator's female voices are creeptastic. But honestly, so are most of the female characters in this book, so it's kind of a wash.
I guess I'd recommend thinking really carefully about what you want out of an audiobook before downloading this one. No question that it's wonderfully written, and (for the most part) well narrated, but it just wasn't what I wanted to be listening to.

Simply wonderful.
Revisado: 12-13-11
Funny thing about this book. While Junior is a Spokane Indian teenager living on a reservation, his story helped me to better understand the struggles of the inner-city youth my boyfriend works with in Chicago. Some stories are just universal. The down-side of listening to the audiobook is that you can't see all of Junior's cartoons (illustrated by Ellen Forney) which are as much a part of the story as the text. The advantage of the audiobook is Alexie's reading of it, which is awesome. I don't think you'll regret giving this one a chance.

Novella Carpenter loves cities - the culture, the crowds, the energy. At the same time, she can't shake the fact that she is the daughter of two back-to-the-land hippies who taught her to love nature and eat vegetables. Ambivalent about repeating her parents' disastrous mistakes, yet drawn to the idea of backyard self-sufficiency, Carpenter decided that it might be possible to have it both ways.

entertaining insight into a different lifestyle
Revisado: 12-13-11
I live in a big city and am an avid supporter of farmers markets and community gardens. But until I read Farm City, the idea of people living in U.S. cities and subsisting only on what they manage to grow and raise themselves seemed to me to be tall tales right up there with Paul Bunyan. While I have no intention of raising chickens in my living room any time soon, I'm thrilled to know that such people are not myths. Novella Carpenter, with her honesty and sense of humor, gives a great tour of her life as an urban farmer, and Karen White provides a great narration.
