Delicate balance between right and wrong
Revisado: 11-03-18
My preferred method of reading fiction these days is listening to audiobooks. For me, there are three things that make for a good audiobook. First, the narration must be clear and pleasant, and the voice fluctuations for different characters, must be consistent. Second, the plot must be compelling enough to make me want to listen to it every chance I get, like driving to work, or traveling, or resting in bed at night. And third, if I am sad when it’s over, I know it was a good book because I don’t want it to be over. Not Her Daughter by Rea Frey had these three qualities in spades. If I had to sum it up in one word, the book was riveting!
It portrayed a compelling struggle between right and wrong and you constantly ask yourself “what would I do in that situation?”. You have the startling sensation of roooting for a kidnapper, while at the same time, having pity for a self loathing mom.
I found myself scolding the detectives, but also secretly happy that they were so inept In their investigation.
I preferred the “during” and “after” chapters to the “before” chapters. Sometimes I feel the publishing community requires books to be of a certain length which forces authors to add more background info. I know, with my own novel, I have gotten some pushback that it’s maybe too short, and if I do a rewrite, I will need to add more background. However, Ms Frey, expertly writes the background of these characters to help you understand their motivations.
I could not wait to be drawn into each day with Sarah and Emma as they teetered on danger and normalcy. The sacrifices Sarah makes for this child keeps you wondering what will happen.
The ending was not what I expected and it took me a day to come to terms with it.
I have heard, that this novel has been opted for film and I can’t wait to see it. Congratulations Ms Frey for an outstanding delivery of Not Her Daughter.

Bad Southern accents ruined this nice story
Revisado: 04-28-18
I listen to a lot of audiobooks and have even recorded one, so I know its not an easy task. The southern accents in this recording almost made me stop listening. Only the story kept me going. The accents were like the characters were southern country bumpkins, not a lawyer and banker. Even worse, they were not consistent. The same character had many different accents. The narrators natural voice is very nice, she should have just given that voice to Corey. I found myself cringing at the accents many times. The story was nice, simple, easy to follow. I'm not sure where "Unexpected" comes into play because it was all pretty predictable. Nevertheless if you have a long lost love somewhere, you will enjoy this book. I think maybe kindle or hard copy may be the way to go.

Intelligent Romantic Suspense!
Revisado: 03-30-18
You know a book is good when you can't wait to get back in the car and listen to more. When you take the long way home to listen to more. What I loved most about this book was the level of vocabulary. I found myself cheering when a word I don't hear very often was used, like superfluous. I wanted to write them down to remember for this review, but I was driving.
Its rare to find women's fiction with this level of intelligence and it elevated the story to a cerebral place.
The relationship between Zadie and Emma was familiar in its complexities of female relationships. Fierce and loyal at times, jealous and deceitful at times.
I loved the medical backdrop and there were only a few instances of my pet peeve in novels of too many details about unnecessary things, however the medical details were excellent.
Debut novelists "write what they know" so I suspect there is a lot of the author in this story. I'm going to guess Zadie is her story because Zadie is always bright. Emma is so flawed in her deepest betrayal almost to the point that you can't believe all that happened.
The pace of the story was great, the buildup was great, the reveal was disturbing in a what the hell, suspenseful sort of way.
The narration was fantastic with the perfect tone and cantor.
Queen of hearts will make a great movie someday.

Moving Story with Interesting elements
Revisado: 03-22-17
Would you consider the audio edition of Coasters to be better than the print version?
Yes, I love the audio even more than the print version. I can imagine the scenes come to life.
What did you like best about this story?
I love all the fashion scenes, Fashion Shows and collaborations and picturing all the beautiful clothes.
Any additional comments?
The story has a nice pace with a lot of surprising moments. I love the characters and seeing how they interact with Jennifer. It's about love but more about how an intensely creative designer is derailed by her accident and how she pushes through with her work and her life.
