Historia
Nearly six hundred years ago, a short, genial, cannily alert man in his late 30s took a very old manuscript off a library shelf, saw with excitement what he had discovered, and ordered that it be copied. That book was the last surviving manuscript of an ancient Roman philosophical epic by Lucretius—a beautiful poem containing the most dangerous ideas: that the universe functioned without the aid of gods, that religious fear was damaging to human life, and that matter was made up of very small particles.

Historia
As the 21st century enters its second decade, foreign wars, the lingering recession, and a caustic political environment are taking their toll on Americans. But the party hasn't ended for Aidan Cole and his friends, a band of savvy, if cynical, New York journalists and bloggers who thrive at the intersection of media and celebrity.

Did I miss something? Not a 4star book.
Revisado: 02-22-12
What did you like about this audiobook?
Story unfolded quickly.
How has the book increased your interest in the subject matter?
It hasn't
Does the author present information in a way that is interesting and insightful, and if so, how does he achieve this?
Not really. A bit like a made for TV movie. There's a story line but it's not plausible and the characters are fairly shallow.
What did you find wrong about the narrator's performance?
They were okay. They were limited by the shallowness of the characters.
Do you have any additional comments?
It passed the time. I did finish it. That's why I gave it 2-3 stars rather than less.

Historia
Faced with the end of his quiet, settled life, reluctant spy Milo Weaver has no choice but to turn back to his old job as a “tourist”. Before he can get back to the CIA’s dirty work, he has to prove his loyalty to his new bosses, who know little of Milo’s background and less about who is really pulling the strings in the government above the Department of Tourism - or in the outside world, which is beginning to believe the legend of its existence.

Storyline and characters are a bit convoluted. Hard to find a character you can like, which tends to be an important characteristic of a book, for me.
Despite this it kept me listening and the ending made it worthwhile, all the bad guys got what they deserved.

Historia
Of all of John Irving's books, this is the one that lends itself best to audio. In print, Owen Meany's dialogue is set in capital letters; for this production, Irving himself selected Joe Barrett to deliver Meany's difficult voice as intended. In the summer of 1953, two 11-year-old boys – best friends – are playing in a Little League baseball game in Gravesend, New Hampshire. One of the boys hits a foul ball that kills the other boy's mother. The boy who hits the ball doesn't believe in accidents; Owen Meany believes he is God's instrument. What happens to Owen after that 1953 foul ball is extraordinary and terrifying.

Irvings very best
Revisado: 03-26-10
If there is a meaning to life it's woven into the entire story right up to the end, which is very much a believable surprise. Odd characters as typical of his books but not so odd as to be unreal or annoying. The reading by Barrett was incredible, it makes the book complete.

A Must Listen
Revisado: 02-10-10
A story of coming of age, the horrors of war, and also of love. Written to be told, and very well told by Perlman. His voices and inflections capture the personalities as Benioff must have intended. One of the best books I've read and the best audiobooks I've listened to yet.

Historia
For the past twenty-five years, Margaret Atwood has written works of striking originality and imagination. In The Blind Assassin, she stretches the limits of her accomplishments as never before, creating a novel that is entertaining and profoundly serious. The novel opens with these simple, resonant words: "Ten days after the war ended, my sister drove a car off the bridge." They are spoken by Iris, whose terse account of her sister Laura's death in 1945 is followed by an inquest report proclaiming the death accidental.

Beautifully written and beautifully read
Revisado: 01-21-10
Just finished listening to this book for the second time. I didn't have the problem others have reported regarding sound quality, perhaps it was the equipment they were using. Atwood's perspectives on life, where it has meaning and where perhaps we expect too much meaning, moved me the second time as much as the first. And Dionne's personification of the characters brought the story to life. One of the best audiobooks I've ever listened to, and I'm certain will listen to again.
