Historia
Following the death of her father, journalist and hospice volunteer Ann Neumann sets out to examine what it means to die well in the United States. When Ann Neumann's father was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, she left her job and moved back to her hometown of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. She became his full-time caregiver - cooking, cleaning, and administering medications. When her father died, she was undone by the experience, by grief and the visceral quality of dying.

Ableist, discriminatory, self-righteous
Revisado: 12-20-21
As a medical provider I thought this would, as the tagline claims, “explore dying in America” and instead was incredibly turned off by the bias and discrimination of the author. Instead of examining culture, or grief or even political influences appropriately, the author became derogatory, belittling, and contemptuous toward “the religious” (anti- Semitic and anti-Catholic I believe) to such a degree she stopped investigating the physical experience of death and instead goes in circles attacking opponents of right to die or abortion on solely her moral grounds. She becomes so prejudicial and partisan that the book devolves into disorganized ranting. Quite a disappointment and missed opportunity to have a conversation about the process and transformation of dying.

Historia
In 1918, a world war raged, and a lethal strain of influenza circled the globe. In the midst of all this death, a bizarre disease appeared in Europe. Eventually known as encephalitis lethargica, or sleeping sickness, it spread worldwide, leaving millions dead or locked in institutions. Then, in 1927, it disappeared as suddenly as it had arrived. Asleep, set in 1920s and '30s New York, follows a group of neurologists through hospitals and asylums as they try to solve this epidemic and treat its victims - who learned the worst fate was not dying of it, but surviving it.

I loved this book. It was entertaining, informative, provocative, and everything I needed/look for in good literature.

Most of us have heard of gluten - a protein found in wheat that causes widespread inflammation in the body. Americans spend billions of dollars on gluten-free diets in an effort to protect their health. But what if we've been missing the root of the problem?

sounds like a machine
Revisado: 07-14-17
The information is thought-provoking and interesting; I'll probably re-listen to it but the narrator sounds mechanical, with unnatural pauses and inflection. It sounds like it's being read by a text-to-speach program and distracts/detracts from the content.
