Historia
Having somehow convinced Lady Annika Jenoure to marry him, all Finlay Ashowan wants to do is settle down, cook some good meals, and enjoy a quiet life in Daxaria. But fate has different plans. Fin’s father, Aidan Helmer, fire witch and servant of King Matthias of Troivack, has arrived in the kingdom with devastating news: Annika’s brother Charles has been taken prisoner, and the only way his life will be spared is if Annika or Fin goes to plead his case. Given that an attack from Troivack is imminent, there’s no way some trickery isn’t involved in this plot.

Original, great characters, great humor

I love this series! I felt invested in all the characters, esp Finn. Lots of dialog as well as action. Best of both worlds. I just relistened and enjoyed it all over again.

Poor writing and worse narration.
Revisado: 04-23-24
i could not get past the first couple of chapters. The narrator is shockingly bad, especially compared to the wonderful Graham Malcom. (RIP) The opening had Hamish talking smack to the Chief Inspector, totally out of character, as was the rest of what I could stand to hear. The narrator's overwrought delivery was unnerving, and listening to his voices seemed like a penence.

Even as a girl Morgan has always been wild, like the seas which batter the cliffs beneath her home, Tintagel Castle. But she has always been safe, too. Then one day her father is called away to a war from which he does not return. In his place comes the High King, Uther Pendragon, with the sorcerer Merlin lurking in his wake. Uther claims Morgan’s mother, the Lady Igraine as his queen.

Revisado: 04-23-24
I enjoyed the story, perhaps a bit too much! i listened for hours at a time. The narraror's voice was beautiful and hypnotic. The portrayal of Morgan was unique, and took us through the background and hardships she had to bear since 6 years old when her father died and Uther took over. Well writen, so the story flowed. (Except for the confusion between I and me, so typical in books these days.)

Historia
When Prudence Alessandra Maccon Akeldama ("Rue" to her friends) is bequeathed an unexpected dirigible, she does what any sensible female under similar circumstances would do: she christens it the Spotted Custard and floats off to India. Soon she stumbles upon a plot involving local dissidents, a kidnapped brigadier's wife, and some awfully familiar Scottish werewolves.

Terrible Narrator
Revisado: 01-18-24
i stopped listening a few years ago and thought I would try again. i was so disappointed since I am in love with the Parasol Protectorate. This narrator mispronounces names that were so ably prounced by Emily Gray. She also made Alexia sound hysterical. The souless Alexia could yell at times, but never sounded hysterical. Here she sounds more like Alexia's mother, who was given to hysterics. I think i can suffer to the end this time, but won't buy the next installments.

Boring, with slow, deliberate narration
Revisado: 10-05-23
The story is full of unnecessary detail, with little action. Not that I demand a lot of action, but this was really drawn out. The narrator was as slow as the story, delivering every word slowly and clearly without much expression. I started to use it to go to sleep! For me, this book was a real snore (pun intended.) Just a boring, workmanlike effort. I gave up halfway though.

Too many extrameous details
Revisado: 06-13-23
Not my favorite, but not a return book. Although the story is a good idea, too much detail makes it less interesting. For example, all the minutiae of getting Internet into the house, and teaching the Wizard how use it. Every step. I like the main characters. Perhaps the story will pick up? I am only 5 hours in.

Helene Wecker's dazzling debut novel tells the story of two supernatural creatures who appear mysteriously in 1899 New York. Chava is a golem, a creature made of clay, brought to life by a strange man who dabbles in dark Kabbalistic magic. When her master dies at sea on the voyage from Poland, she is unmoored and adrift as the ship arrives in New York Harbor. Ahmad is a jinni, a being of fire, born in the ancient Syrian Desert. Trapped in an old copper flask by a Bedouin wizard centuries ago, he is released accidentally by a tinsmith in a Lower Manhattan shop.

A fine story
Revisado: 05-31-22
I won't sure at first if I woukd like it. That quickly changed. I was riveted by the story with its twists and turns. The characters were described so well I was fully engaged with them, and cared deeply about their outcomes. This was a fine audiobook, with a great narrator. my sister, who read the paper version, loved it as well.

From the first sentence, I sensed the change, which I found a bit jarring. Eventually, the story gained its flow snd kept my interest. A few things did not jibe with the previous portrayal of a couple of the characters. I hated the ending, so unlike the previous books.

Not realistic for the era
Revisado: 01-05-22
This book would appeal to listeners who don't require realistic social conventions of the era. Everyone acts like people of today. Bothered me, but may appeal to others who want characters who act modern but drive carriages. Also, police begging for the help of a young married women to solving a murder with them? Yah, right.
