Historia
As much a historical document as it is a novel, this 1946 winner of the Houghton Mifflin Literary Fellowship Award is the poignant and unblinkingly honest story of Lutie Johnson, a young black woman, and her spirited struggle to live and raise her son by herself amid the violence, poverty, and racial dissonance of Harlem in the late 1940s. Originally published in 1946 and hailed by critics as a masterwork, The Street was Ann Petry’s first novel, a beloved best seller with more than a million copies in print. Its haunting tale still resonates today.

Truly, An American Classic....
Revisado: 03-12-20
Many reviewers complained of the sound-effects, but once Petry carries you into her world the novel, already alive with deeply intimate manner of writing the psychic lives of her characters, the sound-effects were a welcomed addition that increase the dimension in which you're already enthralled.
An American classic because Petry captures one of the fundamental paradoxes of American life if you are of black: that your presence is one of violent negotiations -- value, risk, cost-benefit, life, death, political economy -- that converge at the site of material existence & ontology (not necessarily divergent factors).
Simply brilliant & almost unmatched. One has to wonder the psychic costs to Petry, herself, in capturing the her characters' psychic lives in a way that articulates, and subverts the violence that structures their existence.

Historia
Set in the 1950’s Paris of American expatriates, liaisons, and violence, a young man finds himself caught between desire and conventional morality. With a sharp, probing imagination, James Baldwin’s now-classic narrative delves into the mystery of loving and creates a moving, highly controversial story of death and passion that reveals the unspoken complexities of the human heart.

A Deeply Sad and Beautifully Brutal Story
Revisado: 02-29-20
Damn!!!! James Baldwin takes you into the deepest corners of your humanity/humanness. The beautiful brutality of relating to one another; the brutal fluidity of sexuality; the beautiful tragedy of love; all of which articulated across the experiential landscape of sexuality, gender, & race. Even though I've said this much, I'm still at loss, truly, for words/thoughts.
The narration was adequate, it seems, given the characterological structure of the story....

A rickshaw driver dreams of being a Bombay movie star; Indian diplomats, who as childhood friends hatched Star Trek fantasies, must boldly go into a hidden universe of conspiracy and violence; and Hamlet's jester is caught up in murderous intrigues. In Rushdie's hybrid world, an Indian guru can be a redheaded Welshman, while Christopher Columbus is an immigrant, dreaming of Western glory. Rushdie allows himself, like his characters, to be pulled now in one direction, then in another.

As Ferguson, Missouri, erupted in August 2014 and media commentators across the ideological spectrum referred to the angry response of African Americans as 'Black rage', historian Carol Anderson wrote a remarkable op-ed in the Washington Post showing that this was, instead, 'white rage at work. With so much attention on the flames,' she wrote, 'everyone had ignored the kindling.'

Every American needs to read this most revealing and eye-opening history of the psychopathic nature of Anerica's settler colonialist modernity. It is as instructive as it is indicting yet utterly & beautifully handled history in the hands of this Elder Maternal Wisdom.

Historia
Right from the start, Bigger Thomas had been headed for jail. It could have been for assault or petty larceny; by chance, it was for murder and rape. Native Son tells the story of this young black man caught in a downward spiral after he kills a young white woman in a brief moment of panic. Set in Chicago in the 1930s, Richard Wright's powerful novel is an unsparing reflection on the poverty and feelings of hopelessness experienced by people in inner cities across the country and of what it means to be black in America.

This book should only be taught both with significant theoretical framing and by a black instructor to, at the very least, a racially mixed demographic. This text should not be taught in a predominatly white classroom.

Gibran considered The Prophet his greatest achievement. He said: "I think I've never been without The Prophet since I first conceived it in Mount Lebanon. It seems to have been a part of me....I kept the manuscript four years before I delivered it over to my publisher because I wanted to be sure, I wanted to be very sure, that every word of it was the very best I had to offer."

Historia
Joseph Conrad's searing tale of one of the strangest and most memorable journeys ever taken. Quite simply the scariest book ever written, this is a searing tale of one of the strangest and most memorable journeys ever undertaken - to the heart of a geographical and psychological wilderness from which no-one returns unscarred. For this isn't simply a journey up an uncharted river into a geographical wilderness; rather, it's a trip deep into our collective subconscious.

How does the spectacle of the sufferings of others affect us? Are viewers inured - or incited - to violence by the depiction of cruelty? Susan Sontag here takes a fresh look at the representation of atrocity - from Goya's The Disasters of War to photographs of the American Civil War, lynchings of Blacks in the South, and the Nazi death camps, and to more contemporary horrific images of Bosnia, Sierra Leone, Rwanda, Israel, and Palestine, as well as New York City on September 11, 2001.
