Historia
With her husband barely clinging to life at home, Becka has taken to jogging. Running helps clear her head and her heart. But it's not until she discovers a free-standing confessional booth deep in the woods that she begins to clear her conscience. As the days pass, and as her husband's condition worsens, Becka returns to the booth, finding it hard to stay away. But what draws her there? Is it the clean feeling of confession? Or is it what might be listening on the other side of the grate?

A sustained internal monologue following the logic of a sociopath undergoing a psychotic breakdown.
Revisado: 01-22-23
THE LEAST OF MY SCARS is a harrowing feat of narrative, putting the reader into the mind of a serial sadist. This sustained internal monologue follows the logic of a sociopath undergoing a psychotic breakdown after three years of isolation. Alan Ross turns in a masterful performance on the audiobook: 5 hours and 44 minutes of lunatic confession, justification, and self-aggrandizement. Content warning: everything. This is not for the casual horror fan.

Historia
The year is 1348. Thomas, a disgraced knight, has found a young girl alone in a dead Norman village. An orphan of the Black Death, and an almost unnerving picture of innocence, she tells Thomas that plague is only part of a larger cataclysm - that the fallen angels under Lucifer are rising in a second war on heaven, and that the world of men has fallen behind the lines of conflict. Is it delirium or is it faith? She believes she has seen the angels of God. She believes the righteous dead speak to her in dreams. And now she has convinced the faithless Thomas to shepherd her across a depraved landscape to Avignon.

Some producer must have fallen in love with Christopher Buehlman’s novel and pushed hard for a voice actor of proportionate talent. BETWEEN TWO FIRES is a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Lots of horror, lots of beauty.

The infernal conjoining of author Stephen King & narrator David Morse
Revisado: 04-12-22
Stephen King’s REVIVAL has a reputation for containing one of the darkest endings he’s ever written. That may be so, but on the way, the listener enjoys a heady measure of King’s peerless nostalgia as the protagonist recalls the family life of his childhood with its waning religious belief and waxing devotion to rock ‘n’ roll. There are some genuinely touching love scenes but the story ends in classic, unadulterated horror. Narrator David Morse plies his skills subtly, easing into the performance, but don’t don’t let him catch you off guard: he’s a brilliant voice artist. The audiobook of REVIVAL showcases the gifts of two masters in all their glory.

Revisado: 02-28-22
Stephen Graham Jones is a master storyteller. “The Backbone of the World” takes protagonist Millie Two Bears on a strange and emotional ride. I know Stephen’s work well, but did not send this end coming. Authentically and wonderfully voiced by Native American actor Charlotte Flyte. She’s perfect as Millie.

In this striking and bleak, yet luminous debut collection, Nathan Ballingrud, winner of the inaugural Shirley Jackson Award, uses the trappings of the Gothic and the uncanny to investigate a distinctly American landscape: The loneliest and darkest corners of contemporary life. Ballingrud’s stories are love stories. They’re also monster stories. Sometimes the monsters collected here are vampires or werewolves.

Excellent performance of riveting and tragic horror tales
Revisado: 02-28-20
Any of these stories would be gold if only for the tragic circumstances and actions of their protagonists, and THEN the horror sets in. Ballingrud’s prose rings poetic in the vein of Cormac McCarthy. These are heartbreaking stories illuminated by horror. Travis Young’s strong Georgia accent lends credence to the socially and morally impoverished characters. Ignore the handful of audio hiccups where the sound is momentarily louder on a re-recorded sentence. The performance of these riveting stories will command your attention.

The Rite describes the reality of demonic possession. It also traces the history of exorcism and and treats related topics such as satanic cults and black masses. Since Fr. Thomas was a skeptic and the author is a fact-seeking journalist, this book is more compelling even than the previous best-seller on this topic, The Exorcist.

Fascinating look at the real practice of exorcism
Revisado: 01-29-17
Author Matt Baglio narrates this book. As other commenters note, he's not a professional voice actor. After the first chapter, I didn't care - this is a fascinating and well-written account of the pervasive mystery surrounding demonic activity and exorcism. The amount of detail conveyed on the experience and the ritual is impressive and insightful. If you've seen the film, the book is quite a different story and, to me, is much more interesting.
