Interesting baseline, too many plot devices

I enjoyed book 1, and the narrator was very good in both book 1 & 2. Both books are well written, a bit quickly paced but that's not terrible in and of itself. By the end of book 2 there's just too much thrown in to the mix.

As a whole the focus seems to be on 'bad things aren't necessarily evil' - MC engages in slavery to save/improve lives (including his own), whilst super heroes are often shown to be imperfect or downright bad, etc - which is interesting. I enjoyed that.

*low key spoilers lurk below, so fair warning*

But then you add in harem, albeit where the women are essentially the ones deciding who is in the harem, and the MC sort of just... I don't know. Can you develop stockholm syndrome as a kidnapper? Because that's what it felt like, MC was just sort of enveloped into the relationships... even though he literally purchased (most) of the women and is in complete control of them, able to change their powers, memories, hair color, brain function, etc at any time, which I mean, weird power dynamics? At the same time, no real gratuitous sex scenes and you could kind of just ignore it in book 1. It started being more of a focus in book 2, and you can see where more harem members are in the pipeline and it's just not my thing. Then you add the apparent fact that they can't get two consecutive days of downtime between fights, he's suddenly hiring/pseudo enslaving highschool kids and turning to politics, and then the newest aspect of literal gods showing up and now people pray for power? And what is with the lady wanting to literally eat her harem competition?? Yeah. Too much.

I was honestly enjoying the series - interesting characters, different plot from other books, a bit disjointed but eh - until the romance thread became weirdly emphasized, despite adding nothing of import to the plot line. I even looked past the family ties aspect. But in book five a completely unnecessary marriage, followed by, you guessed it, a second completely unnecessary marriage? I didn't even finish that book. Wouldn't have bothered with the series if I'd known ahead of time it was going down this path.

Was honestly enjoying this series until the romance twist - which isn't necessary in the first place - turned to a random 2nd wife. interesting plot, interesting characters. Wouldn't have picked up the series if I knew this was coming. Won't be continuing. Why ruin a decent book/series for absolutely no reason?
