There just isn't much accurate knowledge accessible from either Japanese or Chinese historical sources. Many of the books discuss the background of Chinese development at the time: Kublai Khan was the grandson of Genghis Khan and was working crushing both Korea and the Soong empire in southern China just before trying to attack Japan.
