Tedious
Revisado: 09-25-23
If not for the narrator I wouldn't have gotten past the second chapter. The tweets and moderator channel chats are beyond frustrating.
The storyline is not well thought through and gave the impression that the author only decided who the perpetrator would be while she was writing the last chapter.
The relationship angst between S & R must also now come to a point. What should create pleasurable tension, is in fact just irritating.

Enjoyable
Revisado: 11-01-11
As usual with Mark Billigham's books I enjoyed this Tom Thorne novel - however the author should not have narrated it. He should understand the characters better than anyone and yet it sounds as if its the first time he's met them. The mood suffers as a result of this.

Historia
Convalescing in Sandytown, Dalziel befriends Charlotte Heywood who is researching the benefits of alternative therapy. With much in common, the two soon find themselves in league when trouble comes to town. Sandytown's principal landowners have grandiose plans for the resort -- none of which they can agree on. One of them has to go, and when one of them does, in spectacularly gruesome fashion, DCI Peter Pascoe is called in to investigate -- with Dalziel and Charlotte providing unwelcome support.

Enjoyable
Revisado: 09-12-11
As mentioned by other reviewers, the first section of the story is told via e-mail messages between a young woman & her sister, and recordings of "the fat man's" thoughts. I found the e-mails irksome but on the other hand, the musings of the fat man are at times quite funny.
The author repeats himself a good deal which is tedious but all in all the plot was enjoyable.
Jonathan Keeble was excellent, as always.

Don't imagine for one moment that I'm not watching you.... The Metropole Hotel, Brighton. After a heady New Year's Eve ball, a woman is brutally raped as she returns to her room. A week later, another woman is attacked. Both victims' shoes are taken by the offender.... Detective Superintendent Roy Grace soon realises that these new cases bear remarkable similarities to an unsolved series of crimes in the city back in 1997.

Growth
Revisado: 07-01-11
I've listened to the previous books and am so pleased that the author has the main character experiencing positive growth. No 'darkness' in this soul.
I enjoyed the people and the plot. Unfortunately the narrator does not understand the tone of the story which leads to his pace & inflection being off.
Still worthwhile to listen to.

The plot is enjoyable - with enough twists and surprises to keep you intrigued. Unfortunately the narrator misses the feel of the book and detracts from the enjoyment thereof.

Disappointing
Revisado: 11-28-10
This is certainly not Dick Francis at his best, for that matter nor is it Toni Britton at his best. The story takes ages to get underway and is as exciting as wilted cabbage. Even Britton sounds bored. I love Dick Francis' books but unfortunately this was a disappointment.

The basic plot is interesting, unfortunately it does not survive the lectures on ancient mystecism. I fastworwarded through a big portion of the book. This would probably do better as a film. I enjoyed the narrator though.

Story is great but narrated as if for infants!
Revisado: 12-22-09
John Grisham is always a good read. Unfortunately the narrator's style is so distracting that I could not enjoy it properly. He doesn't understand the feel of the book and reads it as if for children.
