Historia
This is DC Smith's third investigation with the Diver and Diver Associates agency. They have been asked by a member of Norfolk's aristocracy to look into the tragic death of her younger brother, Freddie, the late Lord Thorpe of the title. The inquest verdict was of misadventure, but it isn't long before Smith begins to suspect there has been a serious miscarriage of justice.

In need of an edit
Revisado: 11-26-24
The soliloquy overkill along with incessant and unnecessary explanation explanations have turned the once delightful Smith into a smug and self-satisfied PI. Too long - and in need of a sharp edit.

This started off really well, but the longer it went on (at least a third too long) the more implausible it became.

At eight, she spins the globe and picks her favourite country on the sound of its name: Burundi. And now that she's an adult, Augusta has no interest in the goings-on of the small town where she lives with her parents and her beloved twin sister, Julia. When an unspeakable tragedy upends everything in Augusta's life, she's propelled headfirst into the unknown.

The uncanny nature of life
Revisado: 09-19-20
The story of Augusta and Parfait is woven together skilfully and poetically. It held my attention all the way, and I was sorry when it came to an end. That feeling you get when it's hard to know how to follow up a book that's taken you into another world.

A haunting, harrowing and poetic journey
Revisado: 05-03-19
Perfectly told tale of two men, one at the beginning of his life, the other at the end, both with deep dark secrets. Only the third character, the timeless landscape, seems settled. The voices are as authentic as they are poetic. I savoured every word. The characters have stayed with me, haunted me, from as soon as the last word was spoken. Oh, and the narration is superb. The accents are perfectly rendered. Do yourself a favour... it is the sort of book that enriches life.

Historia
Connell and Marianne grow up in the same small town in rural Ireland. The similarities end there; they are from very different worlds. When they both earn places at Trinity College in Dublin, a connection that has grown between them lasts long into the following years. This is an exquisite love story about how a person can change another person's life - a simple yet profound realisation that unfolds beautifully over the course of the novel. It tells us how difficult it is to talk about how we feel and it tells us - blazingly - about cycles of domination, legitimacy and privilege.

Historia
Still Life with Bread Crumbs begins with an imagined gunshot and ends with a new tin roof. Between the two is a wry and knowing portrait of Rebecca Winter, a photographer whose work made her an unlikely heroine for many women. Her career is now descendent, her bank balance shaky, and she has fled the city for the middle of nowhere. There she discovers, in a tree stand with a roofer named Jim Bates, that what she sees through a camera lens is not all there is to life.

Boring and predictable
Revisado: 06-01-16
Is there anything you would change about this book?
I'm a fan of the readability of Anna Quindlen's novels. I never expect too much depth, just a light tale to accompany me on my tasks. However, Still Life With Breadcrumbs is lite-weight deluxe.
Would you recommend Still Life with Bread Crumbs to your friends? Why or why not?
No. Too predictable.
What does Carrington MacDuffie bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
A nice pace.
Do you think Still Life with Bread Crumbs needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
Absolutely not. Where can you go after happily every after?

Historia
An impassioned, tender and joyous memoir by the author of Musicophilia and The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat. When Oliver Sacks was twelve years old, a perceptive schoolmaster wrote in his report: 'Sacks will go far, if he does not go too far'. It is now abundantly clear that Sacks has never stopped going. From its opening pages on his youthful obsession with motorcycles and speed, On the Move is infused with his restless energy.

Shame about the voice/accent
Revisado: 05-17-15
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Oliver Sack's life is real and fascinating. Despite his many years in the United States, he still speaks with an English accent. So, no offence to the reader himself, but the American accent is ALL wrong.
How could the performance have been better?
A reader with an English accent is imperative. I find it hard to understand who selected this voice/accent for this production.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Oliver Sacks is one of the world's most fascinating, not to mention engaging, polymaths.
Any additional comments?
Read it! Or simply petition the publisher to change the voice/accent. And when doing it, make sure the reader has a spattering of yiddish/hebrew words.

Historia
The Condition tells the story of the McKotches, a proper New England family that comes apart during one fateful summer. One day on the beach, Frank McKotch is struck by an image he cannot forget: his 13-year-old daughter, Gwen, strangely infantile in her child-sized bikini, standing a full head shorter than her younger cousin Charlotte. At that moment, he knows a truth that he can never again unknow: something is terribly wrong with his only daughter.

Hard to fathom the many good reviews
Revisado: 06-11-14
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
No. I only listened for two hours before giving up.
Would you ever listen to anything by Jennifer Haigh again?
Not especially.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
No problem with the narration.
Was The Condition worth the listening time?
No. Characters are one-dimensional, and hard to believe in a story that cried out for depth.

Broad, deep and compelling
Revisado: 07-06-13
Would you listen to Americanah again? Why?
I would love to. Adichie's extraordinarily rich language, so beautifully and poetically read by Adjoa Andoh. A story that crosses continents and cultures with insight, sensitivity and startling authenticity.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I loved them all.
Have you listened to any of Adjoa Andoh’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I wish I was more attracted to the McCall Smith detective series, because Andoh's interpretation would be the tipping point. I could listen to her all day.
If you could take any character from Americanah out to dinner, who would it be and why?
Ifem. I identified with her immigrant's search for home.

Historia
Celebrated novelist Francisco Goldman married a beautiful young writer named Aura Estrada in a romantic Mexican hacienda in the summer of 2005. The month before their second anniversary, during a long-awaited holiday, Aura broke her neck while body-surfing. Francisco, blamed for Aura’s death by her family and blaming himself, wanted to die, too.

Should have stayed a magazine article
Revisado: 08-22-12
What disappointed you about Say Her Name?
The personal failed to transcend and become universal.
What could Francisco Goldman have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Goldman could have been a little less obsessed with diarising the relationship, and put more effort into a philosophical approach to the tragedy, thereby placing it in the broader scheme of his life.
Any additional comments?
Goldman's untrammeled adoration for his young wife prevented us from seeing what there actually was to adore. A little less telling, and a lot more showing could have made it more believable.
