The 1st Dortmunder — superbly done!

Spot-on performance of one of my favorite novels! If Wodehouse or George Macdonald Fraser had written a crime caper set in New York, this would be it. Highly recommended!

Historia
We never know what will happen next in Florida. We know only that, any minute now, something will. Every few months, Dave Barry gets a call from some media person wanting to know, "What the hell is wrong with Florida?" Somehow, the state's acquired an image as a subtropical festival of stupid, and as a loyal Floridian, Dave begs to differ. Sure, there was the 2000 election. And people seem to take their pants off for no good reason. And it has flying insects the size of LeBron James. But it is a great state, and Dave is going to tell you why.

Wry humor; distracting narrator
Revisado: 10-02-23
Standard Dave Barry fare for fans of his wry, humorous observations — this one is centered on Florida. The travelogue is interesting, and the humor is smile-worthy and occasionally laugh-out-loud funny! The narrator, however, was a distraction. He. Started. Out. With. A. Pause. After. Every. Word. I thought I was listening to Katharine Hepburn on Golden Pond. If you stick with him, though, he does get somewhat better after about 45 minutes of that. Glad I listened (but only after about 30-45 minutes).

Tom Brown's Schooldays

Historia
The story of young Tom Brown's seemingly hideous years spent at rugby school and his spirited and astonishingly stalwart response to the institutionalised bullying prevalent at the 'Great' British public schools became exactly the campaigning tool its author hoped it would. The regimes at these schools had been largely unchallenged, with the assumption being that the education and training received were the best.

Definitive performance of an enchanting classic!
Revisado: 02-17-23
"Tom Brown's Schooldays" is a funny, poignant, and enchanting coming-of-age novel that is a true classic. It has been continuously in print since 1857, for good reason. Newcomers who discover this gem are immediately swept along with the likeable hero and his relatable scrapes. This novel created the genre of schoolboy stories, like "Goodbye, Mr. Chips" and so many others, but "Tom Brown" remains the first among equals. I came to this book from the "Flashman" series of G. M. Fraser, which spins off from "Tom Brown," and I was not disappointed! The performance by Hugh Bonneville is perfect: Tom Brown comes to life under his narration, so much so that it hard to imagine a different voice for the character. HIGHLY recommended!!!

Magnificent!
Revisado: 05-14-22
Jonathan Cecil is amazing! He brings to sparkling life this Wodehouse gem, beyond witty in its wordplay! Wodehouse may or may not have invented the English romantic comedy, but he certainly perfected it. Higher than highly recommended!!! (And beware. There are other versions of “A Damsel In Distress,” one of which pronounces Wodehouse as WODE-house. Ugh. Don’t be fooled. This one is the genuine Tabasco.)

Historia
The writing of P. G. Wodehouse put him among the most widely read humorists of the 20th century. He began his post-collegiate career working in a bank. Very dissatisfied with the job, he began writing magazine articles when he had any spare time. What an outstanding professional decision that turned out to be. A Damsel in Distress is a prime example of the Wodehouse trademark of elaborate quirks of hilarity.

Terrible narrator.

I couldn’t get past the Introduction. The narrator pronounced the author’s name as WOAD-house, not WOOD-house. He lost me at that point. Highly NOT recommended.
