Lots eventually explained, but not sure I buy it...
Revisado: 10-07-24
Few words were pronounced oddly, but performance was OK otherwise. Not sure I can believe situation would go that way, even if invented parts are assumed true. And jaded character magically swaps to optimist after a scary moment? Then solves his biggest life issue by being a Pollyanna? I'm not sure I'll try another Dean Koontz novel (this was my first). Wasn't horrible, but not inspired and logical to me either.

They try to do a lot, and some is good.
Revisado: 08-31-24
One minor annoyance was no chapters. Meaning how you normally can press forward to skip the 'This is Audible' announcement, but not here... And no obvious way to know where the start or end of various sub-sections were (with chapter entries).
It also jumps a lot in time. Which for such a short piece, where they're trying to use amplified emotions so much... it was just hard to connect for me with it all. Felt kind of artificial. Drama being manufactured.
But I'll agree many of the worries and topics discussed made sense to include. I'm just not so sure that trying to narrow everything to only 2 people was the perfect choice (to personify all the directions for us).
It's pretty short so you don't lose much listening through it once. And currently free with 'plus'. I'd be curious to see honest answers to a lot of their topics. Like... How much must we change before we're not fully human anymore? If we could 'fix' everything, what might we lose or regret? Is doing what we're told, even if for our own good, really living our own life anymore? Etc...

Historia
For Hudson, the virtual world of PrimeVerse isn't all bad. It's beautiful, much nicer than overpopulated Earth. It almost feels like a vacation except for the volatile wildlife, lack of any amenities, and—oh yeah—the inability to log out. Exploring the world, learning his class, and leveling skills is all fun and games until a powerful rogue player with a vendetta shows up to wipe out Hudson and his primitive tribe. Thrust into a conflict he didn't create, Hudson is forced into a cycle of respawning where he learns that even death can be used as a tool. So much for that vacation.

Best and worst of possible people & new world
Revisado: 07-27-24
Every performance feels turned up to 11/10. It makes certain characters painful to hear speak, ever. And for some of the books it happens for a long time. Sure, other uploaded people could be a source of tension/drama, but we have mostly sheep and a few heroes or obvious villains. Meaning once they understand how the world works the only real problems come from other humans, which gets tiring to hear about.
Aspects of the world are interesting and I appreciate it being a bit more flexible than many who copy role playing games so closely (one class seemingly forever, and skills only being trainable by other people with a high enough skill, etc). Though the premise makes me question some of the structure and limitations of the world (people made this for other people to supposedly live in indefinitely?).
Very glad I didn't 'buy' this (plus listener trying to make the most of a temporary membership during a deal). Not sure I'll finish all 3 books (started book 3 recently). Probably would enjoy a lot more if I was super drunk or high (dampen my internal emotional responses), but that's not my life anymore. Or maybe if I was in high school, and accustomed to extreme + horrible people as the typical person I'd notice.

The actual story is mostly annoying again. With parts that at least aren't similar to other litrpg books. I disagree that someone who attempted suicide would avoid killing a jerk, but maybe I'm just evil?

Historia
The Scavenger species are circling. It is, truly, provably, the End Days for the Gzilt civilization. An ancient people, organized on military principles and yet almost perversely peaceful, the Gzilt helped set up the Culture 10,000 years earlier and were very nearly one of its founding societies, deciding not to join only at the last moment. Now they've made the collective decision to follow the well-trodden path of millions of other civilizations; they are going to Sublime, elevating themselves to a new and almost infinitely more rich and complex existence.

Tries for a lot...
Revisado: 02-24-23
I tend to like new ideas and situations more than societal issues, or political intrigue. I have a few other books of his, so knew a bit of what I was getting into. But so far I'm not thrilled with it.
Lots of very alien things, seemingly for the sheer fact of their alienness. Which makes them harder to keep track of. And the reader doesn't adjust pace much. Seemingly attempting to finish at a certain quick-ish pace (maybe they're paid by the hour or job?). The voices vary a bit, but I can't keep track of who is speaking by the change in sounds.
And some scenes will just dive into something I don't expect. Latest was (I think) an attempt at a romantic encounter. Honestly I just got annoyed the longer it went on. I can't feel any pleasure from them. And I can't follow the story of who is doing what anyway.
Maybe a 2nd or 3rd listen through will work better. But honestly I haven't found any of his books that I just love. It's always been "well, I like X and Y, but jeez I had to slog through so much for only that." I can filter dross, but don't want to pay for the privilege.

Christian Sci-Fi that pretends to discuss/explain
Revisado: 02-14-23
For the range of ideas they try to talk about it's annoying and sad that one of the biggest questions is just assumed. Yeah, I'm talking about "God". The author breezes by the possibility to offer something beyond "I have faith" claiming it's obvious there was/is an intelligent designer to the universe and something about "infinite regression fallacy"?
I wish they'd explained the latter as I don't see how asking how God came to be is ignorable. Isn't the whole point of the question that you're claiming to be somewhere without having gotten there first? Effect without cause.
I bought the first book through a sale. Was worried by a review or two, but hoped it wouldn't bother me. Took book 2 and 3 to really be sure I was annoyed. I kept hoping for a truly unique and interesting situation to make up for it. There was enough to keep that hope alive, but generally it's just a lot of common human drama set in space, swapping out some humans for aliens. That plus a countdown clock. Insert witty banter here. At least we get some interesting accents with the audiobook.
Maybe I'm looking for what can't be given anymore... Something new yet familiar. Something that stretches my mind, but still makes sense. Too often I feel no tension as the author just needs to insert macguffin here.

In 2004, Doctor Damien Howard's 131st birthday celebration took an unexpected turn. His personal SETI project detected an extraterrestrial signal directed at Earth. Unfortunately, Dr. Howard's long-hoped-for communication contained a message of dire warning rather than greeting. In 1945, humanity had become a species of galactic interest and was given 100 years to address the issue.
