Historia
When Boady Sanden first receives the case of Elijah Matthews, he’s certain there’s not much he can do. Elijah, who believes himself to be a prophet, has been locked up in a psychiatric hospital for the past four years, convicted of brutally murdering the pastor of a megachurch. But as a law professor working for the Innocence Project, Boady agrees to look into Elijah’s file. When he does, he is alarmed to find threads that lead back to the death of his colleague and friend, Ben Pruitt, a man shot to death four years earlier in Boady’s own home.

Love Eskins but not my favorite
Revisado: 10-16-23
I’m a huge fan of Allen Eskins and had high hopes for it after its prequel The Heavens May Fall. But it fell a little short for me. The religious speak was a bit much and there were too many characters to keep track of in that part of the plot. It also seems like the custody part was wrapped up too quickly at the end. It won’t stop be from reading him. It just wasn’t my favorite.

Slow and confusing
Revisado: 08-18-23
I slumbered through the first part with Elena and Nicholas. Was happy to then hear it change to Amelia’s story but it was very repetitive. What I hated most in listening to this book was I never knew what character I was listening to, especially at chapter beginnings as well as the switching from 1st person to 3rd person. A simple verbal name at the beginning of each chapter would have been a huge help to me knowing who I was listening to. And adding the ghost element was a big turnoff for me.

Historia
Kentucky, 1850. An enslaved groom named Jarret and a bay foal forge a bond of understanding that will carry the horse to record-setting victories across the South. When the nation erupts in civil war, an itinerant young artist who has made his name on paintings of the racehorse takes up arms for the Union. On a perilous night, he reunites with the stallion and his groom, very far from the glamor of any racetrack.

Interesting yet a little slow
Revisado: 07-25-23
While I admire the research that obviously went into this book, I felt it moved a little too slow. I enjoyed the Jarret and Lexington relationship and storyline but not so much the modern voices. Loved People of The Book and was hoping this would be right up there with that level of writing but it just fell a little short for me.

Historia
When Olivia Shaw’s mother dies, the sophisticated food editor is astonished to learn she’s inherited a centuries-old English estate—and a title to go with it. Raw with grief and reeling from the knowledge that her reserved mother hid something so momentous, Olivia leaves San Francisco and crosses the pond to unravel the mystery of a lifetime. One glance at the breathtaking Rosemere Priory and Olivia understands why the manor, magnificent even in disrepair, was the subject of her mother’s exquisite paintings. What she doesn’t understand is why her mother never mentioned it.

Too many loose ends
Revisado: 10-09-22
I’m clearly in the minority here. Many loose ends left me dissatisfied, as well as lack of depth to most characters. I also felt some occurrences were unrealistic. Story dragged on and on and I stuck with it hoping for some action, some feeling, some connection but never got it.

Kept waiting for this book to excite me. Never happened.
Revisado: 05-17-21
I listened on Audible and wish I could get those hours back. I know I’m in the minority here, but this book was a snooze. After the first couple of chapters sucked me in, I kept waiting for it to pick up and it never did. I contemplated abandoning it but don’t like to do so once I’m so far in. I usually love these southern stories but had a hard time connecting with the characters in this one. This is one I wish I abandoned 8 hours earlier.

Expected more out of this book
Revisado: 02-05-21
Spoiler alert. I went into this book eager and with high hopes given the reviews. But it fell flat for me. The only character I felt a connection to was Jude and I found myself liking hers and Reese’s story the most. Though I do feel Reese’s transgender story was skimmed over and could have been much more compelling. Kennedy felt like such a caricature of a blond, rebellious, rich LA teen and was not likable nor was her mother the further into the book I read. The end felt so rushed and left me very frustrated. There was no mention of Stellas husband Blake toward the end at all and I found it unrealistic that Kennedy would not have divulged the truth to him about Stella’s secret. Stella just flies back to LA with no consequences for what she did to her family, her mother, her twin. Desiree picks up and moves to Texas and the twins never contact each other again. Unrealistic and left me frustrated.

Historia
Every life reaches that crucial intersection, the place where you must choose your fate, or have it chosen for you. For best-selling author Rich Cohen (The Fish That Ate the Whale, The Last Pirate of New York), it came in a writing workshop senior year in college, when, at 17, he had to knuckle under to a ruthless professor or make a righteous, self-defeating stand.

Waste of two hours
Revisado: 07-18-20
The only part of this that I mildly enjoyed was the reading of his poem to the professor and how it was received by the prof. I kept cringing at how involved the dad got on his sons behalf. That could never happen today. I couldn’t stand the narration and almost stopped listening many times because of it. I was just hoping the story went somewhere and sadly it did not.

Historia
Ellen O’Farrell is a professional hypnotherapist who works out of the eccentric beachfront home she inherited from her grandparents. It’s a nice life, except for her tumultuous relationship history. She’s stoic about it, but at this point, Ellen wouldn’t mind a lasting one. When she meets Patrick, she’s optimistic. He’s attractive, single, employed, and best of all, he seems to like her back. Then comes that dreaded moment: He thinks they should have a talk. Braced for the worst, Ellen is pleasantly surprised.

Unrealistic storyline, bland characters
Revisado: 05-16-20
While I loved Moriarty’s book What Alice Forgot, this book to me was a dud. I only stuck with it because I was hoping (praying) for some excitement, a twist, something. I feel the storyline was not believable and none of the characters grabbed my interest at all. They were all rather bland and had no depth whatsoever. Also feel there should have been some segue in the performance to differentiate the new chapters so I would know if it was Ellen or Saskia who was speaking. In some cases it wasn’t clear until a couple sentences in who was speaking. I wish I abandoned this book within the first hour.

Historia
About a Boy stars a guy called Will, who doesn't really want any children. He wonders why it bothers people that he lives so happily alone in his fashionable, Lego-free flat, with massive speakers, and an expensive cream-colored rug that no kid has ever thrown up on. Then Will meets Angie. He has never been out with a mom before. And it has to be said that Angie's long blond hair and big blue eyes are not irrelevant to his sudden reassessment of his attitude toward children. She is truly beautiful.
