Historia
J. Robert Oppenheimer was one of the iconic figures of the 20th century, a brilliant physicist who led the effort to build the atomic bomb but later confronted the moral consequences of scientific progress. When he proposed international controls over atomic materials, opposed the development of the hydrogen bomb, and criticized plans for a nuclear war, his ideas were anathema to powerful advocates of a massive nuclear buildup during the anti-Communist hysteria of the early 1950s.

Listening better than reading.
Revisado: 09-04-17
If you could sum up Bel Canto in three words, what would they be?
LISTEN DON'T READ: My husband & I both read this book & loved it years ago. When we recently listened to "A Gentleman from Moscow" it reminded us of "Bel Canto" so we downloaded & listened to it. We both agreed that it was even better as an audio book!
What did you like best about this story?
The way a story about very little was turned into a tale about so much by the character development & the human interest provoked by the way the story unfolds.
What about Anna Fields’s performance did you like?
I felt that she captured the essence of the story well; although, I liked it better listening @ 1.25X speed.
If you could take any character from Bel Canto out to dinner, who would it be and why?
It would have to be the Soprano. She was so captivating I would think.
Any additional comments?
If you haven't tried audio books, this one will get you hooked!

Historia
Douglas Petersen may be mild-mannered, but behind his reserve lies a sense of humor that seduces beautiful Connie into a second date...and eventually into marriage. Now, almost three decades later, they live more or less happily in the London suburbs with their moody seventeen year-old son, Albie. Then Connie tells him she thinks she wants a divorce. The timing couldn’t be worse. Connie has planned a month-long tour of European capitals, a chance to experience the world’s greatest works of art as a family, and she can’t bring herself to cancel. And maybe going ahead is for the best anyway? Douglas is privately convinced that this landmark trip will rekindle the romance in the marriage, and might even help him to bond with Albie. Narrated from Douglas’s endearingly honest, slyly witty, and at times achingly optimistic point of view, Us is the story of a man trying to rescue his relationship with the woman he loves, and learning how to get closer to a son who’s always felt like a stranger.

One of the best listens in a while. Story always interesting & excellent reader. I was disappointed in ending but that perhaps just makes the whole experience more true to how life sometimes is.

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

Too much cussing & pseudoscience
Revisado: 07-01-16
Has good story line & a lot of human interest in story. I liked the character development too. The blizzard of fake science kind of drove me crazy. The language was awful & makes it a story that could not be recommended to anyone not used to salty words such as the "F" word & definitely limits the age appropriateness to adults only.

Native American Story narrated by Lakota Historian
Revisado: 04-15-16
The story told was researched from the oral tradition of the Lakota tribes. It explains many of the historical events thru the eyes of their culture. I found it very interesting but think it would have been a better book if some of the last 3 chapters & epilogue were streamlined as they seemed be repetitious. Overall a good listen.

Historia
The great Oglala Sioux chief Red Cloud was the only Plains Indian to defeat the United States Army in a war, forcing the American government to sue for peace in a conflict named for him. At the peak of their chief’s powers, the Sioux could claim control of one-fifth of the contiguous United States. But unlike Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse, or Geronimo, the fog of history has left Red Cloud strangely obscured. Now, thanks to painstaking research by two award-winning authors, his incredible story can finally be told.

The first & only book I have read (listened to) that explained the Native People's point of view & the extraordinary lengths the US government went to in order to steal their land & practically exterminate them like the buffalo.

Historia
On May 1, 1915, with WWI entering its tenth month, a luxury ocean liner as richly appointed as an English country house sailed out of New York, bound for Liverpool, carrying a record number of children and infants. The passengers were surprisingly at ease, even though Germany had declared the seas around Britain to be a war zone. For months, German U-boats had brought terror to the North Atlantic.

History I did not know.
Revisado: 10-15-15
I liked the facts & history of a time leading up to WW I a time I have read little about.
I didn't care for the author's morbid & repetitive description of the corpses recovered & I thought the book dragged out excessively in mid portion. Ended up listening@ 11/2 speed to finish.

Poxl West fled the Nazis' onslaught in Czechoslovakia. He escaped their clutches again in Holland. He pulled Londoners from the Blitz's rubble. He wooed intoxicating, unconventional beauties. He rained fire on Germany from his RAF bomber. Poxl West is the epitome of manhood and something of an idol to his teenage nephew, Eli Goldstein, who reveres him as a brave, singular Jewish war hero.

Fasincinating WW II story told from a different point of view
Revisado: 07-21-15
After you get past the author's over-exuberant verbosity, the story carries you along. Would have been better if shorter with less redundancy & the parts written from the teen/young adult voice were shortened more than the uncle's part. A more age appropriate in vocabulary/dialect from the nephew would improve the listening experience too.
