One of favourites, and still makes me cry
Revisado: 05-23-20
I loved the trilogy from the start years ago, and it unfailingly still manages to make me laugh through much of it, chuckle with tenderness from time to time, and cry and smile both at the end. A very powerful young adult story that you keep returning to over the years, especially in this audio version. The reading performance is very comfortable for me, the voice soothing and expressive where necessary, not overly so, just as it sould be in my mind's imagination.
There is a fault in the recording, though, for which I can only give it a 4 for overall. It is not the performance itself at fault, not the story in the least, but a technical glitch, I think.
!!! Warning for spoilers (there is goes): when hawk brothers come to heal Van, and they goin forces all four of the participants, there is a part which I love dearly missing from the recording. I know it is there, because I read it a couple of times before listening. The description of the process of calling the mage back to himself. And in the recording there is nothing, just the beginning of the scene, and then we are already at the beginning of the next scene in half a second. It was a pity to miss on this episode in the audio. End of spoiler.

Rather a disappointment
Revisado: 09-23-19
The overall is rather trite, a real disappointment from these authors. Repetitions in a couple of scenes as though there was a copy-paste moment there, a very unconvincing cliché damsel-in-distress reaction from a seasoned warrior in a professional situation, and a predictable outcome... Finished mostly for the pleasant audio performane. Itbwas a tiny bit monotone at times, but probubly due to the text itself. And I loved Cohen's no-nonsense manner, and a number of other secondary characters' voice interpretations very much. So many thanks to Mr. Todd Scott, mostly.

Jonty Stewart is handsome and outgoing, with blood as blue as his eyes. When he takes up a teaching post at the college where he studied, his dynamic style acts as an agent for change within the archaic institution. He also has a catalytic effect on Orlando Coppersmith.

I love this series, AND Phil Mayes' rendition!
Revisado: 09-17-19
Actually, I only have a string of exclamation marks and praise words for this audio. I have read the whole of the series, and keep following both the author, and the Cambridge Fellows. This audio is a delight in and of itself, as I have already re-listened to it several times. Please, just please, keep recording the series' other volumes! Every time I finish this one, I keep hoping Audible is going to offer me the next book to listen, but it has been futile hope as yet. What I like about Mr Mayes' performance, is very pleasant accent, different 'voices' of the two characters, no overdoing 'emotional' speech, very smooth overall, and it really creates the effect of presence, of being eye witness to what's going on in the story. I look forward to more books in the series, wherr there are more 'voices' to recreate, and important female characters to come to life too. Hope Mr Mayes is up to the challenge. I would really enjoy it to be his renditions too, if any.

Legends chronicle Robin Hood and Guy de Gisbourne as the deadliest of enemies. The reality is...complicated. Home razed by Church edict, loved ones struck down by treachery, Rob is left for dead. Taken by the old druid master into the deeps, he emerges with a new name and purpose: Leader of a band of tight-knit outcasts, claiming the ancient forest and wielding the Horned God’s vengeance with silent, deadly arrows. Also escaping the aftermath of Loxley’s destruction, noble-born Gamelyn has returned from Crusade with his own new identity and purpose - but no absolution.

Great listen
Revisado: 09-14-19
Longish at times, but great non the less, not in the least due to the performance. A bit strange with the various accent imitations which spound somewhat off with the overall non-british read, but I loved the emotion portrayal and very distinct characters, comfortable pace, and the story is truly ingenuous :-)

Historia
Strange things are happening all around Brinnswick. Things that remind me of a piece of my past I’d rather forget. Girls are being killed, drained of blood, and left with strange markings on their bodies. When I finally connect the cases together, a specialist is called in - though, what he’s a specialist of is beyond me. When the chief assigns him as my new partner for the case, I can’t help but groan on the inside. Why of all people would I be assigned to Ailin Ellwood?

Rather entertaining, but tiresome to listen to
Revisado: 06-09-19
As the review form suggests, I "struggled" to finish the listening. The story is actually an average read, predistable and clichéed, but entertaining, when one's after exactly that after work. But the performance is very hard to follow, and irritating at times. To high rising "voices", esp. the main character, who sounds like a histerical drama queen, and a teenager all in one. Very out of character discription, I think. I did appreciate the "voice" of the evil character, though. It was original and really creapy.

Historia
This is what happened. I saw it, and it is a true tale. So begins the story of Merlin, born the illegitimate son of a Welsh princess in fifth-century Britain, a world ravaged by war. Small and neglected, with his mother unwilling to reveal his father's identity, Merlin must disguise his intelligence - and hide his occasional ability to know things before they happen - in order to keep himself safe.

Finally here
Revisado: 03-08-19
I am truly happy my favourite book has finally been re-read since the early cassette edition. It is great to have one in good quality audio. Overall, I enjoyed the whole book, and shall continue with the two following volumes, even though I know it nearly by heart through rereading and relistening. However, though the performance is very good, I cannot give it 5 stars, for the unfulfilled expectations, I suppose. I was so much hoping for a younger, a more charismatic maybe, voice to interprete Merlin's complex personality. And this is a very qualitative audiobook, but not that it is outstanding really. The voice sounds mature, a bit monotonous, not very good at doing feminine voices or children's. But that is only my subjective opinion, and I'm very conscious that the fact that I have been the series' fan for many many years is probably not the best sauce for judging new interpretations.
