A “logical” Conclusion
Revisado: 03-16-25
I appreciated the expression of “grey” alliances in this novel. There can be good enemies and bad enemies. There can also be good friends and bad friends. Fortunately the friends are all good (depending on the identity of the “hooded man”) or else I would have been a bit heartbroken.
Many good character arcs seen in acts of “illogical” love, redemption, justice, and loyalty. I’m only sad that it came to an end

Emotionally stirring…the hope of any good novel
Revisado: 03-13-25
There are many characters in this series, and it’s hard not to get attached to them. So I really appreciate how some more characters are given a spotlight.
SPOILER
I was disappointed in the death of Sara because I feel like she had more story left. I know it’s a series about war, so death is inevitable. However, she had much more to bring to the table and to explore. I know there are many tritagonist to explore and bring to life, but it’d been nice to see Sara deal a killing blow to Schohtar or another major antagonist.
Overall, a good romp

Historia
The crow hissed: "Give me one good reason why I shouldn’t cut your throat here and now. One single damn reason." The prince froze with fear and said nothing. At last, his behavior was logical. His facial features had lost any order. Shivering, he closed his eyes in expectation of certain death. But then there was a whispering. "Could there be three reasons maybe?" She suppressed the reflex to laugh—she hadn’t laughed aloud for years and was not sure if the muscles needed were even still functioning.

A great introduction to a series!
Revisado: 03-13-25
Narrator did really well! I was nervous because I really enjoy the narrator for Sam’s series The Gravedigger’s Son and The Waife Girl. But I was pleasantly surprised. This had a nice slow burn pacing, and predictability was certainly on the mind; however, there were enough turns to keep me surprised. I like a good balance of twists along with predictable outcomes, motifs, themes, etc.

Historia
When Russ Wesley finds an unusual artifact in his grandfather’s collection of rare antiquities, the last thing he expects is for it to draw the attention of a ferocious alien from a distant planet. Equally surprising is the adventurous team of intergalactic exterminators dispatched to deal with the alien threat. They’re a little wild, and a little reckless. Worse yet, they’re so impressed with Russ’s marksmanship that they insist he join their squad . . . whether he wants to or not.

Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and Guardians of the Galaxy
Revisado: 12-05-24
I thought the pacing is good. The characters are relatable enough, and their character flaws are worked in a charming way. Based on the movies, seemed like a cross of Hitchhiker’s Guide, GOTG, and Firefly…so I dig it. Has a number of unanswered questions, and some are revisited by the end of the novel. Definitely leaves way for a much awaited sequel

Historia
Outside the island there is nothing: the world was destroyed by a fog that swept the planet, killing anyone it touched. On the island: it is idyllic. One hundred and twenty-two villagers and three scientists, living in peaceful harmony. The villagers are content to fish, farm and feast, to obey their nightly curfew, to do what they're told by the scientists. Until, to the horror of the islanders, one of their beloved scientists is found brutally stabbed to death.

Wayward Pines mixed with The Mist
Revisado: 11-23-24
I thoroughly enjoyed this Whodunnit romp. Has a nice mix of twists, and most importantly, for me, the twists don’t feel as if they come out of nowhere. Nor are the twists blatant. There are nice subtleties and hints. The narrator brings a sense of echoes from Turton’s other works. It’s a nice familiarity to see traits of other characters in the characters of The Last Murder. It reminded me a fair deal of the show Wayward Pines and The Mist. Can’t wait for the next Turton work

Slow burn on a slow burning ship
Revisado: 01-26-24
Saw this as a suggestion on a period mystery suggestion video. No regrets! I love it. I wish it would be turned into a series of novels, but at the same time..this would be a hard one to top. The pacing is static like a slow burn, but enough twist and turns are dished out to keep my interest strong. The different points of view are well done while maintaining relative main protagonists. I initially thought Pipps as the main, but I was seamlessly taken along this journey with Hayes and Sara. The spooky elements throw it into a genre bend that keeps you guessing

Didn’t Know I needed this Medieval Story!
Revisado: 10-16-23
Quite a nice romp in the medieval! I enjoy the slow burn pacing. The details kept my attention without feeling overdone or muddlesome. It has just enough craziness within the timeframe. Jackson does a great job on narrating and distinguishing between characters. I never felt lost.
