Historia
In this utterly immersive volume, Mike Wallace captures the swings of prosperity and downturn, from the 1898 skyscraper-driven boom to the Bankers' Panic of 1907, the labor upheaval, and violent repression during and after the First World War. Historia
In Gotham, Edwin G. Burrows and Mike Wallace have produced a monumental work of history, one that ranges from the Indian tribes that settled in and around the island of Manna-hata, to the consolidation of the five boroughs into Greater New York in 1898. It is an epic narrative, a story as vast and as varied as the city it chronicles, and it underscores that the history of New York is the story of our nation. The events and people who crowd this audiobook guarantee that this is no mere local history. It is in fact a portrait of the heart and soul of America....

Loved the narrator
Revisado: 01-24-24
I’ve been listening to this for 5 months and I’ve started to read other things in his voice. It’s authoritative and inflects when I like it. Very epic and now i walk around nyc and see all the names and places I would’ve never understood, but now i know. On to the next one!

Historia
Historians have long told the story of America’s birth as the triumph of Jefferson’s democratic ideals over the aristocratic intentions of Hamilton. Chernow presents an entirely different man, whose legendary ambitions were motivated not merely by self-interest but by passionate patriotism and a stubborn will to build the foundations of American prosperity and power.

Tarantino Writes His Own Fanfiction
Revisado: 12-13-22
I really liked this book. I was wanting to find something that was about Hollywood in this era and got lucky when this came out. Took me a while to finish but I got around too it. Though he has one movie left I hope Tarantino never stops creating. I’d buy anything he does.
His passion shows through the words. His love for stars, directors, writer and the era. It’s contagious and now I am off to watch more old TV westerns and fall asleep on the couch.

Historia
In Sit Down and Shut Up, Brad Warner tackles one of the great works of Zen literature, the Shobogenzo by 13th century Zen master Dogen. Illuminating Dogen's enigmatic teachings in plain language, Warner intertwines sharp philosophical musings on sex, evil, anger, meditation, enlightenment, death, God, sin, and happiness with an exploration of the power and pain of the punk rock ethos.

Brad Warner cured my tummy ache!
Revisado: 07-11-22
The first book I believed to be a bit too autobiographical for what I was looking for. This book has a great blend of past experiences and present day insights to the ultimate reality of being. I’m glad I read the first book because then I wouldn’t be able to understand the references as much. Brad is super authentic human being and doesn’t hide behind the page. He is 100% himself all the time. Great sense of zen and all its quirky light-heartedness.
Great choice for intermediate practitioners of Buddhism who wants to learn a little more and be entertained at the same time. Love all the punk music and references. I’m only 24 so it’s all very old school too me but none the less entertaining.

March 20, 2019 marked the end of an era - Disney took ownership of the movie empire that was Fox. For almost a century before that historic date, Twentieth Century-Fox was one of the preeminent producers of films, stars, and filmmakers. Its unique identity in the industry and place in movie history is unparalleled - and one of the greatest stories to come out of Hollywood.

Our media world is unlike anything we’ve ever known
Revisado: 12-04-21
The Book was exactly what I was looking for. I listen to history books. Mostly about war, the United States or Europe. They mostly talk about politics. This was a great escape from the monotony of time. The Book offered insights to great films from the passed. I’d occasionally would pause and watch one of the films the author would be talking about. Taking in all the names that were placed that the beginning of each movie. Was great multimedia entertainment.
I often get asked by friends about audiobooks and if they are the same as reading a book. This is a great example of the difference between reading it and listening to it. When listening, the narrator makes subtle decisions in the way the book is read that gives added tone to the book and ultimately alters the perception of a given topic. The narrator in this one really played at this idea and made a lot of decisions in her tone of voice that I probably wouldn’t have made myself. It added to my experience of the material by putting in sarcasm, snarkiness etc. very fitting for Hollywood where these people were very famous but kinda in the background. Was enjoyable to hear her perform and felt like my mother reading to me.
Overall the book is a great read for any movie history buff and wish there were a sequel to all the other studios from the classic Hollywood era. This book really has got me watching so many black and white movies all the time, my friends think I’m weird (I’m 23). It’s fun watching with my grandmother because she has her own personal opinions of the stars like Ty power and victor mature. Can you guess who she likes more? I value this info with high regard and can’t wait to find a new one that will possibly top this. Well done!

Historia
In The Red and the Blue, cable news star and acclaimed journalist Steve Kornacki follows the twin paths of Bill Clinton and Newt Gingrich, two larger-than-life politicians who exploited the weakened structure of their respective parties to attain the highest offices. For Clinton, that meant contorting himself around the various factions of the Democratic party to win the presidency. Gingrich employed a scorched-earth strategy to upend the permanent Republican minority in the House, making him speaker.

Historia
North America was settled by people with distinct religious, political, and ethnographic characteristics, creating regional cultures that have been at odds with one another ever since. Subsequent immigrants didn't confront or assimilate into an "American" or "Canadian" culture, but rather into one of the 11 distinct regional ones that spread over the continent each staking out mutually exclusive territory. In American Nations, Colin Woodard leads us on a journey through the history of our fractured continent....

I love the story
Revisado: 02-23-20
The narrator is good at sounding objective. This is not for people wanting an exciting popular story of American history from a different perspective. This is full of facts and is clearly well researched. Somethings are brushed aside to fit the larger narrative but it doesn’t hurt the story. I’m writing this review right after Bernie won the Nevada caucus. I will have a very different perspective of the book next week as well as a few months from now and of course after the election and years to come. It’s a tale of how things are unfolding yet don’t think you’ll find a lot of answers. I did find comfort in some of the assumptions he makes. The future is always full of surprises and one can’t predict what will happen. Though we are people of our ancestors and it’s hard not to shake the chains of the past. If we keep pushing forward, the past will stay in it’s place.
