over done
Revisado: 03-04-25
I only made it part way through chapter 6. Everything is over described. Too many metaphors, too many similes, too much description and constant angst.
I wanted to get into the story, but it was constantly drowned out by all the extra description of every single thing from the environment, everyone's words, everyone's faces, everyone's steps, blah, blah, blah.

In the ice, east of the Black Rock, there is a hole into which broken children are thrown. Yaz's people call it the Pit of the Missing, and now it is drawing her in as she has always known it would. To resist the cold, to endure the months of night when even the air itself begins to freeze, requires a special breed. Variation is dangerous, difference is fatal. And Yaz is not the same.

philosophical fantasy

Reminds me a bit of The Name of the Wind. Not as deep, but thought provoking on what is right and wrong. Does it depend on the circumstances, or are all decisions both right and wrong simultaneously?

Historia
Mystery author Rachel Goldman is getting used to the idea that her fictional creation, Duffy Madison, has somehow taken flesh-and-blood form and is investigating missing person cases not far from where Rachel lives. Wait. No. She's not getting used to it at all, and the presence of this real-life Duffy is making her current manuscript - what's the word? - lousy.

same base story
Revisado: 10-04-24
I do enjoy these books on some level. The fact that both series is listened to have the same structure, a female main character with humor, a side male character who has detective experience and is in one way or another trying to teach her in an simplifying and some times condescending fashion, and the weird things that happen to them. I love the humor and the quirky things that happen, but the fact that it's the same recipe I'm probably done. The narrator is wonderful.

Historia
The long-awaited sequel to Jake’s Magical Market is finally here—and now with more market! Well, not quite yet. First, Jake has to survive a perilous trek through time if he ever hopes to return home to his friends, his market, and his former world. The last time we saw our intrepid hero, Jake had barely managed to escape being trapped on a dead version of his own world. Using a combination of his new powers, he threw himself backward through time, back to when the god that trapped him first rose to power.

Multi Faceted Characters
Revisado: 07-03-24
The new narrator did a wonderful job!
The story feels like it moves a bit fast at times.
I like how the characters are not one dimensional.
The main character is a wee bit sexist, in that the only "god" character he fights hard to "save from themselves" is a female. But on the upside he's no where close to as sexist as a lot of male main characters are in this genre.
Starting the 3rd book after I finish this review and would completely recommend this series.

Historia
Of course, if there were only one thing under Liscor, there would be far less to fear. However, the dungeon continues to be a threat. At the same time, Goblins continue to roam northern Izril, but not all of them are as hostile to people as Tremborag or the Goblin Lord. Will the Unseen Emperor of Riverfarm make that distinction, however? A reckoning is coming as old faces and new reemerge. And all the while, The Wandering Inn is still serving food and respite and even plays to adventurers and Antinium alike. But something is coming from the dungeons. And it—they—are hungry.

Historia
Last year, Rachel Bacharach met the man of her dreams at a Hanukkah party — and then her outgoing best friend Tamara swooped in and “called” Oz Caplan for herself. It’s a typical outcome for the dependable, bookish Rachel, who is never able to extinguish the spark she immediately felt for Oz. But being secretly in love with her best friend’s boyfriend all year hasn’t been easy.

Bad and sad
Revisado: 11-23-23
Oz is egotistical and unpleasant. In his words, it's just so hard to be a man. He cannot find anything nice to say about his ex in an effort to get her back.
Rachel is sad, she so desperately clings to a man and a "best friend" who clearly do not care about anyone but themselves.

For Dee Kwan, every day is the perfect day. No, really. She has a house she loves, a job she adores, and a ridiculously attractive “nemesis” who never seems to mind when she wins their favorite online game. How can life possibly get better? (It can’t, obviously. It can only get much, much worse.) Soon Dee is forced to share her adorably cozy home with her parents and estranged grandmother. Then she’s tossed into the deep end at work, tasked with cleaning up a scandal for the intimidatingly chic luxury fashion firm Celeste. If that weren’t enough, she discovers her hot nemesis works there, too.

love these two, both narrator and author. Always get the audio books.
I did find Teddy a little annoyingly naive about his father and the future of the company as it always seemed a bit contradictory. But didn't ruin the story.

Rachel Goldman writes mysteries in which Duffy Madison, consultant to the county prosecutor's office, helps find missing persons. Rachel is busy working on her next book when a man calls out of the blue asking for help in a missing person case. The caller's name? Duffy Madison. Is this real, or has she lost her mind? She doesn't have much time to find out, because a serial killer is on the loose, kidnapping and murdering mystery authors. And Rachel may just be the next target.

Narrator makes it worth it
Revisado: 10-21-23
I originally found this author when looking for other books read by this narrator because I love this narrator. I continue to listen to books from this author for that reason also, and only if they are part of the audible plus catalog.
I would not pay money or a credit to listen to them, but they are okay. A good palette cleanser between better books with more substance.
The stories aren't bad, but they are quite repetitive within the book and the series. Sometimes, they have small conflicting information.

The characters have good depth. Does it suck to lose characters you love, sure, but for a story to have a depth of reality, it is necessary.

Historia
Three years ago in a large Victorian house on the Jersey Shore in the town of Harbor Haven, fledgling private investigator Paul and his client, Maxie Malone, were murdered. Since then, recent divorcée and reluctant ghost whisperer Alison Kerby and her 10-year-old daughter, Melissa, have moved in and converted the place to a guesthouse, where Maxie and Paul are now checked in for an eternity and ready to solve any case that comes their way - or at least spook the guests (who love it). Alison’s got a lot on her plate at the moment, however, so when Paul discovers the 300-year-old ghost of a small boy in the house, he decides not to involve her in the case.

redeeming quality is its brevity
Revisado: 08-06-23
I thoroughly enjoyed the first books in the series, this one not so much.
I did not enjoy the narrator. His voices were so different from the series regular narrator. He made grandma sound ancient and creaky.
I couldn't tell if it was the writing for this perspective or the narrator's tone, but he made Alison sound very unlikable.
It left me disliking Paul's character. He seems very know-it-all and critical of everyone else.
In the previous books, he's telling Alison not to judge, just gather the facts, but it seems all Paul does is judge. He's critical of what he calls "the little native boy" instead of using the child's name. He's critical of the Lenape ghosts for not learning English in their centuries of free time as ghosts.
Only finished it because it was so short. Only reason I didn't return it was because it was free as part of the Audible membership.
