Historia
Captured by the enemy, Gareth must face his most dangerous foe yet. Monstrous fusions of flesh and steel they threaten to convert every living person into more of their horrific kind. If he’s to stop them Gareth will need to escape, find his friends, and gather every ally he has. Defeating his terrifying adversary will take every card, skill and level Gareth can muster. Losing is not an option. That would mean the end of not just Acamida, but the entire universe.

My last book
Revisado: 04-26-25
I really don’t want to be mean, but I’m getting worn out by the voice actor's constant changes in volume. He swings from whispering (forcing me to turn the volume way up) to sudden shouting (making me scramble to turn it down). It’s super frustrating and distracting.
As for the story and writing — it’s gotten old. I’m tired of hearing, for the third time in a single book, how Magda’s stupid dress is more revealing than she'd like. I don't know how many times this needs to be brought up, but repeated mentions across the entire series have made it weird and off-putting. The book is packed with pointless details the author feels the need to describe again and again, even within the same chapter. I didn’t care about the dress the first time, and repeated reminders just made me care even less.
Other plot points just made me roll my eyes or even laugh out loud — and not in a good way. Many moments feel like they exist purely to drum up unnecessary drama rather than making actual sense for the characters in the world.
I could — and have — forgiven a lot of these flaws throughout the series, because the core premise is genuinely neat. I love the idea of a world where people can carry magical cards to summon monsters and cast spells. Unfortunately, that premise keeps getting buried under endless, meandering pseudo-philosophy between characters who feel less like people and more like mouthpieces for the author's musings. I just want to read about card wizards, not sit through self-important conversations about life.
Lastly — and maybe this is just me being fussy — I don't think the main character is even right about a lot of what he says about card games. Normally, that wouldn’t be a big deal. But the story treats him like some kind of genius savant, and it gets ridiculous. He makes arrogant, sweeping statements about card games that honestly just make me roll my eyes. I’ve stopped rooting for him; at this point, I just want someone better to beat him at a card game.

Historia
Whisked away from Earth and dropped into a world filled with magic and wonder, Wildermount was the closest thing Gareth had to a home. Now it’s been destroyed, torn apart by twisted nightmares lashing out at the world around them. Fleeing to the arcane tower he discovered with friends and refugees alike in tow, Gareth finds himself involved in new peril. Something dark is corrupting the rainforest around the tower, and stopping it will involve traveling half the world away to a place unlike any he has come across yet.

I love the setting but poor performance.
Revisado: 01-04-25
I really enjoy the concept and card system but the narration is poor. I also do not like the author using so much time to pontificate about class struggle and religion. I don't care about your views and it's not interesting personally.
Other than these gripes I rather enjoyed the book and wish the author would spend more time exploring the world and talking about the cards.

Performance was great but did not like story
Revisado: 11-29-24
The story felt shallow and unnecessarily gratuitous to me. I didn't like the main characters at all and the main character basically aspires to be a regular adventurer which is boring to me.

Historia
When an accident claims his life, Gareth finds himself reborn on Acamida. Dropped into a world where sorcerers draw magical power from a deck of cards, summoning monsters and flinging spells, Gareth must adapt to having arcane power at his fingertips. It’s just a shame he’s found himself with the weakest cards around - goblins!

Very original and fun concept
Revisado: 11-28-24
I really enjoyed the story and world that was created. It was perhaps childish and corny at times but it was childish and corny in ways I enjoyed. I really liked the variety of characters and the inclusion of a very anti-hero character as a member of the main "party."
My only complaint as such is a lack of understanding of the rules and cards and I wish the book included like a rulebook and sample cards so I could better understand what was happening. I wish the character spent more time reading other cards and explaining them to the reader. It also feels like many of the summoned monsters lack many of the unique traits and abilities I have come to expect in similar card games. Regardless it made for a very enjoyable read/listen. I am looking forward to continuing this series.

Great performance but honestly boring book
Revisado: 12-06-21
The book had some entertaining moments but this is overall such a boring book. I only read it to feel like I completed the trilogy. I wish I had just stuck with the first book and called it there.
