Historia
A darkly funny short story about one woman’s reflections on the routes she’s taken through life and the detours she’s made along the way. Doubts and guilt swirl through her mind as she rides the train to her fertility appointment. Each stop stirs up introspective thoughts on her marriage, the loss of her baby, and the lover who got away—contemplations that push her ever closer to wondering if she’s made the right decisions.

Historia
Ross Gay’s The Book of Delights is a genre-defying collection of essays that record the small joys that occurred in one year, from birthday to birthday, and that we often overlook in our busy lives. His is a meditation on delight that takes a clear-eyed view of the complexities, even the terrors, in his life, including living in America as a Black man; the ecological and psychic violence of our consumer culture; the loss of those he loves.

Delightfully written reflections that made me smile
Revisado: 03-11-24
I appreciate that the author narrates this book, elevating his writing style. The descriptions are so vivid and visceral. The reflections are so honest and it’s incredible how they unfold into all of these of profound self revelation for the author but also for the reader! Glad Ross is coming out with another book of (more) delight because I was sad when this ended. Yet, I am excited to re-read this one. I am even inspired to do a similar exercise of writing about delight daily for a year. Hmmm!!

Gripping, visual novel I finished in 3 days!
Revisado: 01-09-24
This book keeps you on the edge of your seat with visually compelling descriptions that feels more like you’re watching a movie vs reading a book! Get this book now! I literally couldn’t stop listening/reading! I love how rich and complex each of the characters are, and how the author unpacks the social issues and dynamics of Lagos, Nigeria. It closes with an ending that feels full circle — uplifting self-determined young women who navigate finding themselves in the disillusionment of societal standards. See for yourself! Enjoy!

Relevant and excellently done!
Revisado: 11-28-22
A really good story and cast! This series is a very clever way to uncover and discuss the racist roots of America, which is often the hidden or denied by myth-making. The diversity of the cast really makes this piece shine because it allows the differing viewpoints to converge and converse. It provides a way into these conversations for those who are actually ready to have them. I love that each episode begins with a teachable moment. For listeners that write this podcast off as “racist,” you’re clearly not ready to have a balanced discourse about racism in America. Maybe search the book “White Fragility” first and then try this again.

Historia

As a hurricane rushes towards the island, she shelters the handsome stranger, names him “Monty”, and tries to uncover the mystery of his missing memory. She soon finds herself falling in love with a man she barely knows, and who doesn’t even know himself. The Mountain and the Sea is a romantic tale about letting go of the past and embracing the present.

Lovely to new work by Kwame Dawes
Revisado: 04-05-22
Since Kwame Dawes’ debut novel, I’ve enjoyed his writing style and the portrait of Caribbean people he shares in his stories. I liked the premise of this story and the pace. I also really enjoy Paula-Anne Jones narration. It kept me engaged and I liked hearing the smile and laughter in a voice to really evoke the emotion of the characters.

It’s just okay; some narration is exaggerated
Revisado: 04-03-22
The premise seems okay—lots of back and forth for context. I like the Vann character, including his narration. I found the narration for Brooklyn’s character to be over the top at times and unbearable at other times. In fact, I couldn’t finish this one. I typically don’t read books in this genre but I read one from another author so I figured I’d try this. Unfortunately, it wasn’t a hit for me.

Historia
At once incendiary and icy, mischievous and provocative, celebratory and elegiac - here is a deeply felt meditation on race, sex, and American culture through the prism of Margo Jefferson's rarefied upbringing and education among a Black elite concerned with distancing itself from Whites and the Black generality while tirelessly measuring itself against both.

Interesting book w/ astute observations about elite Black culture
Revisado: 03-18-22
The author makes very astute observations about my elite Black culture and society, which was very interesting to me. I enjoyed hearing the author’s various stories/memories but the book jumped around a lot so it was hard to understand its thorough line or the author’s summarizing point.

Revisado: 01-27-22
