Historia
Why did Agatha Christie spend her career pretending that she was "just" an ordinary housewife, when clearly she wasn't? Lucy Worsley's biography is not just of a massively, internationally successful writer. It's also the story of a person who, despite the obstacles of class and gender, became an astonishingly successful working woman. With access to rarely seen personal letters and papers, Lucy Worsley's biography is both authoritative and entertaining and makes us realize what an extraordinary pioneer Agatha Christie was—truly a woman who wrote the twentieth century.

Delightful!
Revisado: 03-22-23
I’ve been a fan of Agatha Christie for years and thought I knew much about her life but Lucy Worsley’s biography provided many surprises. She focuses as much on the person as the author and you feel like you know Agatha personally by the end. And Lucy Worsley’s narration is the icing on the cake.

Historia
In 1912, scientist Marie Curie spent two months on the British seaside at the home of Hertha Ayrton, an accomplished mathematician, inventor, and suffragette. At the time, Curie was in the throes of a scandal in France over her affair with Paul Langevin, which threatened to overshadow the accomplishment of her second Nobel Prize. Performed by Kate Mulgrew and Francesca Faridany at the Minetta Lane Theatre, this play by Lauren Gunderson is an ode to two remarkable women.

Superb!

So much about the life and times of these two women was packed into this short listen. Kate Mulgrew and Francesca Faridany did an outstanding job giving voice to them.

Historia
Monsieur Perdu calls himself a literary apothecary. From his floating bookstore in a barge on the Seine, he prescribes novels for the hardships of life. Using his intuitive feel for the exact book a reader needs, Perdu mends broken hearts and souls. The only person he can't seem to heal through literature is himself; he's still haunted by heartbreak after his great love disappeared. She left him with only a letter, which he has never opened.

Meh

It had its moments but the story and characters seem underdeveloped. Not a lot of depth to the story and I just didn't find the characters all that interesting.

Historia
There is an old, empty house in Devil's Cleave, a deep gorge that leads from the high moors down to the harbour village of Hollow Bay. The house is Crickley Hall and it's large and grim, somehow foreboding. It's rumoured to be haunted. It's thought to hold a secret. Despite some reservations, the Caleighs move in, searching for respite in this beautiful part of North Devon, seeking peace and perhaps to come to terms with what's happened to them as a family. But all is not well with the house....

So-so
Revisado: 06-27-13
Not the suspenseful, spine-tingling story I was hoping for but entertaining nonetheless. The narration was generally good. The most dissatisfying part was needing to constantly adjust the volume because the narration swings back and forth between normal conversational volume and whispering.

Historia
From Pasadena to Cambridge to New York, Washington, D.C., India, Ceylon, Paris, Marseilles, Santa Barbara, and Maine, Bob Spitz re-creates an extraordinary life. He takes us beyond the image of Julia as the tall, eccentric woman with a funny voice who taught America how to cook, to establish her as a genuine rebel and beloved icon, a woman who redefined herself in middle age, helped to change the role of women in America, set the standard for how to create a public personality in the modern media world.

Loved it
Revisado: 11-09-12
What was one of the most memorable moments of Dearie?
The moment when Julia and Jacques discuss the drawbacks of the Cuisinart food processor.
Which character – as performed by Kimberly Farr – was your favorite?
I like the way Kimberly Farr performed Julia. Rather than trying to impersonate Julia, Kimberly voiced her in a way that captured Julia's spirit and personality.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I was particularly moved by Julia's farewell to La Pitchoune.
Any additional comments?
I really enjoyed Kimberly Farr's narration of this book. She was very natural, expressive without being melodramatic, and adjusted her tone and rhythm to suit the storyline.
