The author does not know very well what he is talking about. A lot of cliches just to create some kind of story.

Historia
Mazzucato and Collington expertly debunk the myth that consultancies always add value to the economy. With a wealth of original research, they argue brilliantly for investment and collective intelligence within all organizations and communities, and for a new system in which public and private sectors work innovatively for the common good. We must recalibrate the role of consultants and rebuild economies and governments that are fit for purpose.

A bit superficial, but interesting
Revisado: 07-22-23
As I'm working in consulting, it was an interesting read. Lots of fair criticism for the industry, but the conclusion about the 'con' may be often too strong. She only notices the big scandals and the problems with the consulting industry, and these are fair points, but similar points could be noticed about any area, and in particular academia where Mazzucato works.

Historia
Most people, including many policy makers, activists, scientists, and philosophers, have encouraged us to be more empathetic - to feel the pain and pleasure of others. Yale researcher and author Paul Bloom argues that this is a mistake. Far from leading us to improve the lives of others, empathy is a capricious and irrational emotion that appeals to our narrow prejudices. It muddles our judgment and often leads to cruelty. We are at our best when we are smart enough not to rely on it and draw upon a more distanced compassion.

Quite incoherent and confusing
Revisado: 01-29-23
As always, books by Paul Bloom are provocative and therefore interesting to read and listen to. However, I do not feel that in this book he has fully proven his point. I think, the issue may be in the complexity of the concept 'empathy'. Bloom got drowned into explaining what is already empathy, what is not really empathy, and what is not at all empathy. Distinction between cognitive and emotional empathy is not fully convincing as well. Distinction between compassion and empathy also seems problematic.

A convincing manual on building good habits
Revisado: 08-14-22
The book is a very convincing and useful manual on building good habits. However, its drawback is exactly that it does often sound more as a manual rather than a book.

Historia
From the internationally acclaimed Haruki Murakami comes a mind-bending new collection of short stories, all touching beautifully on love and solitude, childhood and memory...all with a signature Murakami twist. The eight stories in this new book are all told in the first person by a classic Murakami narrator. From memories of youth, meditations on music, and an ardent love of baseball, to dreamlike scenarios and invented jazz albums, together these stories challenge the boundaries between our minds and the exterior world.

Great all around
Revisado: 07-20-22
I enjoyed a lot this great collection of short stories. All stories are interesting, they fall together well, the book is exactly of the length it should be. A real Murakami treat. I actually loved the narrator as well - his voice and accent became to me a necessary part of this audiobook.

Historia
Why do we so often seek out physical pain and emotional turmoil? We go to movies that make us cry, or scream, or gag. We poke at sores, eat spicy foods, immerse ourselves in hot baths, run marathons. Some of us even seek out pain and humiliation in sexual role-play. Where do these seemingly perverse appetites come from? Drawing on groundbreaking findings from psychology and brain science, The Sweet Spot shows how the right kind of suffering sets the stage for enhanced pleasure.

A great listen, but not too much of added value
Revisado: 01-01-22
This audiobook was hugely enjoyable, because I am very much interested in the topic and it has provided a good summary of theories on what makes people happy. However, it did not go much further beyond that. There is too little of added value provided beyond summarising (perfectly, though) ideas of others.
The narrator is excellent. For the first time I looked up on what else he is narrating, intending to pick a book based on a narrator and not on the content.

The guru to the gurus at last shares his knowledge with the rest of us. Nobel laureate Daniel Kahneman's seminal studies in behavioral psychology, behavioral economics, and happiness studies have influenced numerous other authors, including Steven Pinker and Malcolm Gladwell. In Thinking, Fast and Slow, Kahneman at last offers his own, first book for the general public. It is a lucid and enlightening summary of his life's work. It will change the way you think about thinking. Two systems drive the way we think and make choices, Kahneman explains....

Historia
In The Sense of Style, the best-selling linguist and cognitive scientist Steven Pinker answers these questions and more. Rethinking the usage guide for the 21st century, Pinker doesn’t carp about the decline of language or recycle pet peeves from the rulebooks of a century ago. Instead, he applies insights from the sciences of language and mind to the challenge of crafting clear, coherent, and stylish prose.
