Not exactly what I expected…
Revisado: 09-17-22
But very good! There is a death which I was not expecting based on the blurb, and I wasn’t totally sure where the story was going, but I really enjoyed losing myself in it.

As someone who is STILL recommending The Last Mrs. Parrish as a must read, I was a little disappointed in this story. I could see some of the twists coming, just had to wait to see how exactly they’d play out. Overall I’d still recommend it, and the narrators were flawless as usual.

Sigh.
Revisado: 03-25-19
This was a bit of a struggle due to the narrator's breathy halting voice. I was very confused by the story, which intrigued me enough to push through and listen, just so I could figure out what the hell was happening! I wouldn't spend $$ on this one, nor would I use a whole credit. Would be best for a BOGO sale, if at all. Great plot, poor narration and unfulfilling ending.

Historia
It was a typical evening at a mall outside Portland, Maine. Three teenage friends waited for the movie to start. A boy flirted with the girl selling sunglasses. Mothers and children shopped together, and the manager at the video game store tended to customers. Then the shooters arrived. The chaos and carnage lasted only eight minutes before the killers were taken down. But for those who lived through it, the effects would last forever.

Welp. Nora Roberts surprised me AGAIN.
Revisado: 03-20-19
As a child, I remember my Nana, mom, and aunts reading Nora Roberts romance novels. I honestly never thought she wrote stories that were SO MUCH MORE than that. After listening to the first two in the Chronicles of the One series, Audible began suggesting more of her books to me. I was intrigued by this one, as it has relevance to current events that affect us all these days. This was heartbreaking, realistic, uplifting, sexy, funny, and yes, romantic. Don't make my mistake and assume her novels are all flowery romances set in the 80's (not that there's anything wrong with that). January LaVoy's performance was stellar, she did an amazing job of differentiating between all the characters without it sounding too "put on". Related (because she did this BEAUTIFULLY): I will be forever thankful that there are female narrators who can read a convincing male part, because I have yet to come across a male narrator who doesn't sound like he's mocking when narrating a female part.

This is not your typical love story. Though it might seem like you know where it's going, you'd be wrong!
I loved everything about the story, and Hazel's narrator was fantastic! I didn't love Josh's narrator though...
Jayme Mattler did an amazing job as Hazel! I actually felt the voice she used for Josh was more appealing than the one HIS narrator did.
It was a really funny, sweet story, with a few legit SCORCHING sex scenes.
Overall, if you DON'T like laughing, smiling, remembering how it feels to fall in love, and hot sex...this book is not for you.
Also, you are probably a monster, and really NEED to read or listen to it.

Flowers, gifts, trips to France: nothing is too good for his family. Then Simon says another woman’s name. The way he lingers on it, Caroline, gives Marianne a shudder of suspicion, but she knows it’s nothing - she can’t entertain this flash of paranoia.

Holy hell!
Revisado: 01-21-19
I have to be honest. I wasn't sure where this was going for a good portion of the beginning of the book. I still wasn't totally sure where it was going toward the middle of the book. The ending wrapped up with me, my jaw dropped and marveling at how beautifully this twisted mystery & thriller wrapped up. After ten years of portraying the perfect wife and mother to the outside world, Marianne is faced yet again with suspicions that her husband is being unfaithful. Rather than allow her imagination to run away with her (as her husband has trained her to believe it has in the past), she decides to look for proof; and finds more information than she ever imagined. She begins to emerge from her stepford, medicinally induced fog, just in time for a truly horrifying event to take place. The event spins a sticky web that traps each member of her family in potentially devastating situation. But who spun the web? Marianne? Her husband? Someone else entirely? And who will help them out if it? If you're a fan of psychological thrillers, this is well worth the credit and time spent listening.

SO GOOD! Great story, PERFECT narration!
Revisado: 12-31-18
This book was incredible. The story ebbed and flowed and took sharp corners as though you were on a wild river rapid, never totally knowing what was ahead.
Karin Slaughter is an incredible writer, and this story in combination with the Kathleen Early's incredible narration cemented both of their places on my list of favorites!
Have you ever been through something so traumatic or difficult, that you managed to deliberately change your memory of it? Perhaps you told yourself the lie enough times to finally believe it. Perhaps someone else told you the lie in an effort to protect you. In any case, this story has enough trauma for 3 more books, and everyone has their own memory of how things happened.
There are so many surprises as you navigate your way through the story, each one better (in regards to suspense anyway) than the last. Different POV's bring you to more "aha" moments as you piece together the mysteries (YES, multiple) this title is chock full of.
I can't go into detail without giving too much away, but it would be worth PURCHASING. WITH MONEY, not just credits! And I NEVER do that. I just purchase more credits ;)
I also plan to purchase the hard copy to add to my collection, it was THAT good.
If you're a fan of mystery, suspense, drama, and "HOLY SH*T" endings, you're going to want this one.

Great story, but as a mother...
Revisado: 12-31-18
When we get Laurel's backstory, she refers to herself as having been "insane" and "consumed" by the disappearance of her daughter. While I don't know (and pray I never do) how that translates for any one person, I cannot grasp that it would have manifested itself in the way it did throughout the book in her relationships with other characters.
The story was gripping without consuming me (an occasional thing that happens when I love a book), and it went in several directions I considered surprising. I typically am only able to listen during the week as I commute to and from work, but made several excuses to get out of the house over the weekend to finish this one up!
The narration was fantastic, with the perfect amount of emotion put into each character.
I also appreciated that the story unfolded little by little, rather than some that drop a load of information on you and then parse out the details over the rest of the book. That makes for a lot of "wait, who is that now? when did that happen?" ...At least for me ha!
Now, I'm going to wrap this review up with a HEAVY dose of bias as a mother, and explanation of why I didn't give this story 5 stars all around:
(No spoilers)
Real talk yall. If my child had gone missing, and I had even the SLIGHTEST suspicion that someone I met had anything to do with it, or knew something even tangentially related to it; there is no way in heaven, hell, or anywhere in between that I would be able to act so totally normal around them and not follow up on those feelings. If nothing else, I'd be asking law enforcement, a PI, and my gossipy next door neighbor to assist in getting to the bottom of it.
I found it EXTREMELY unbelievable that Laurel would have spent so much time with someone about whom she had these suspicions, let alone enter into a relationship with him and then CONTINUE the relationship.
I will say it's not at all what you think, and even when you think you know exactly what happened, there's another surprise.

Great story - enjoyed the twist!
Revisado: 12-31-18
Even after reading the blurb when deciding whether to choose this title, the story was so different than I expected!
A really interesting mix of characters, viewpoints, and of course a good old "he said, she said".
But who to believe, and why? Can you always believe the victim? And just who is the real victim here, anyway?
The narration was strong, and she did a great job of the male parts as well. (random bit: I think part of the reason I lean towards female narrators, is that the males almost NEVER do a reasonable job of female parts. Much easier for the women to deepen or rasp their voice a bit.)
Great wrap up as well! Just when I thought I had it all figured out, bam! A nice little twist!
Worth the credit for sure.
