I’ve read a lot of self help books. And this has been one of the most powerful. That is because it is practical and simple. Many self-help books get lost in wordy and long explanations. This book knows what it wants to say, and says it succinctly. That makes it easier to digest and put in the practice. Highly recommend this book.

This book was surprisingly great. I thought it was just going to be a short mediocre listen in between my other books. I was engrossed in this story. It was told perfectly always making you want to know more keep listening. I also love his way of showing us the way natives of Alaska live and their relationship with the American colonizers. He explained some of the injustices without sounding bitter or hopeless. It was beautiful to learn about these people I know so little about except for what you see in sled dog movies. James Dommek Jr. lives up to his heritage of family story tellers.

I really enjoyed the content of this book. The reason it didn’t get 5 stars though is because it was just too long. At times it felt like I was listening to a text because of the amount of detail provided. It made it hard to get through sometimes. I wish there was an abridged version that was about half as long. That would have been a MUCH easier listen and just as interesting for the amateur just curious to learn a little more about the iconic figure. Other than length though, it was well written in chronological order and well narrated.

How Music Works Audiolibro Por David Byrne arte de portada

The book began with an engaging intro but the majority of the filler and middle of the book could have been removed altogether. I wanted to hear how music worked, not an autobiography of Byrne’s musical career which it felt like the majority of time. It redeemed itself the final quarter of the book though starting with chapter 9, and is why it earned its 4 star rating. It was fascinating how music has evolved for the human species and how it can be analyzed and interpreted through physical, biological, and psychological means.

I am a very religious person, and have oft wondered how anyone could be an Atheist, or as the title of this book puts it, believe in something from nothing. I did not realize this was the point of the book when I began reading it. This book, although full of scientific intrigue, is more of a philosophical one full of scientific backing to support an Atheistic theology.

The beginning of the book was not as enjoyable to listen to because of this and I thought about quitting it halfway through. I quickly decided to see it to the end though realizing this person has every right to preach to me as I have undoubtedly felt a right, even an obligation to preach to others about my own convictions regarding the creation of the cosmos.

With this renewed approach, I finished and thoroughly enjoyed the authors explanation of his atheistic ideology on the basis of the science that he deals with on the daily. Although not convincing in any way to shed any doubt on the faith I hold in a Creator, it did help me understand the point of view of the other side of the coin. It proved a healthy and respectful debate that religious folks and non-religious folks can and should be having.

Excellent and insightful read on the over diagnosis of society. This is not some hippy, anti-medicine book that I kind of thought it might be when first encouraged to read it by my wife. It is written by a member of the medical community and is very thorough and articulate. The biggest take away from this book is how diagnosing society without symptoms can be problematic, costing us more in medical care than needed, and ultimately not doing us any good. He is careful not to say all diagnosis is bad, but that the medical community needs to be far more concerned with diagnosing problems where there may be none.

The thorough nature of the book, through all the different medical fields, is the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars. The same point seems to be made over and over again just with different examples. I think the book could have been half the length and been just as effective in it's message. It's length and repetitive nature made it hard to listen to straight through and I had to break it up with other books along the way to keep me engaged.

This is one of my favorite books. I read it when it first came out. I was super excited when the movie came out and insisted all my family read the book before it's release. They all liked it as much as I did. The only issue I had with it was some of the language. Nothing is too obscene or outrageous but it does drop the F-Bomb pretty often.

This book was absolutely meant to be read as an audiobook. The majority of the book is written in these audio-logs of the astronaut Mark Watney. So by listening to the book, it feels more like you are listening to the audio journal of this martian astronaut rather than a book about a martian astronaut. It makes for an incredible listen.
