Historia
Emerson Knight is introverted and eccentric and has little to no sense of social etiquette. Good thing he's also brilliant, rich, and (some people might say) handsome, or he'd probably be homeless. Riley Moon has just graduated from Harvard Business and Harvard Law. Her aggressive Texas spitfire attitude has helped her land her dream job as a junior analyst with megabank Blane-Grunwald. At least Riley Moon thought it was her dream job, until she is given her first assignment: babysitting Emerson Knight.

Predictable & Silly
Revisado: 02-28-24
An extremely lightweight story written with many cliches and one dimensional characters. Overall it just seemed amateurish. The main character came off as whiney and seemingly unable to recognize the danger she was in. Her little exclamatory statements were silly and unbelievable. The eccentric rich guy was alternately totally out of touch with the real world then unaccountably a master of contacts and knowledge. The moments when he tried to be a bit sexy or flirtatious were cringe-worthy. The narrator just read the book. She did the different characters okay but there wasn't a lot more going on than simply reading what was on the page. To be fair, she didnt have a lot to work with. I finished the book because I needed something mindless to listen to when I was sick. It filled that purpose excellently.

Lots of twists & turns
Revisado: 02-18-24
The story is definitely not predictable. There are many surprising twists in the story that keeps it really interesting right to the end. Some of the tech seems a bit unbelievable but maybe that's just my lack of knowledge of what is possible. The narrator is great and this is a good listen.

Story is good. Narrator is not.
Revisado: 09-28-23
I enjoy the stories and characters from the Thursday Murder Club series and was looking forward to this new release. Unfortunately, the narration was distracting from both the story and the characters. There was little difference in how characters were represented, so it was difficult at times to know who was speaking. The characterization of Chris was awful, and most of the time, female characters - Joyce in particular - just sounded breathless.
The story itself had several subplots, and the introduction of new, minor characters, some of which might become major in the future. Again, their characterizations through the voices provided little as to their personalities, so at least two of them blur together in my mind. It added some confusion to the story. I hope future books are read by a different narrator.

No need for music!
Revisado: 05-15-22
The story and performance are great and enjoyable to listen to. The occasional music interludes are, however, not needed and actually interrupt the flow of the narrative. It's a small thing but becomes increasingly annoying as the story progresses.

Makes no sense
Revisado: 09-22-21
Even a cozy mystery should make some sense. This one does not. Characters are unlikable and one dimensional. Belinda is annoying and Harry is fairly dimwitted for a former police investigator. There is no path of clues these two follow. Instead they engage in an endless stream of dashing from place to place accomplishing little. The mysteries are "solved" only because various people self-reveal their sins. And even though this is supposed to be a somewhat light hearted mystery, the cavalier attitude the characters express about murder is off-putting. Overall this story lacks direction and originality.

Historia
What if Mary Bennet’s life took a different path from that laid out for her in Pride and Prejudice? What if the frustrated intellectual of the Bennet family, the marginalized middle daughter, the plain girl who takes refuge in her books, eventually found the fulfillment enjoyed by her prettier, more confident sisters? This is the plot of The Other Bennet Sister, a debut novel with exactly the affection and authority to satisfy Austen fans.

Predictable but enjoyable
Revisado: 05-19-21
The premise of looking at the events of P&P through Mary's eyes and then going beyond to what might have happened to Mary afterward is a good one. However, there is a lot of lifted dialog from P&P applied to other circumstances so there isn't much "new" in this story. The book is longer than it needs to be and several of the "polite society" parts get really tiresome. A more succient story would have been welcome. Still, all of that being said, the book was entertaining, if predictable.

When Robin Ellacott opens an unexpected delivery, she is horrified to discover that it contains a woman's severed leg. Her boss, private detective Cormoran Strike, is less surprised but just as alarmed. He suspects that four people from his past could be responsible - and any one of them is capable of sustained and unspeakable brutality. With the police focusing on the one suspect Strike has essentially ruled out, he and Robin take matters into their own hands and delve into the dark and twisted worlds of the other three men.

Grisly but fascinating.

Parts were difficult to listen to and the story is graphic in its violence but still, not to be missed. Excellent detective story of course but also offered a deeper development of the characters of Strike and Robin as well as others. Looking forward to the next title in this series.

Historia
When novelist Owen Quine goes missing, his wife calls in private detective Cormoran Strike. At first, Mrs. Quine just thinks her husband has gone off by himself for a few days - as he has done before - and she wants Strike to find him and bring him home. But as Strike investigates, he discovers that Quine's disappearance is no coincidence. The novelist has just completed a manuscript featuring poisonous pen-portraits of almost everyone he knows. If the novel were published, it would ruin lives - meaning that almost everyone in his life would have motives to silence him.

Historia
In the winter of 1920, a quirky bequest draws Morrie Morgan back to Butte, Montana, from a year-long honeymoon with his bride, Grace. But the mansion bestowed by a former boss upon the itinerant charmer, debuted in Doig’s best-selling book The Whistling Season, promises to be less a windfall than a money pit. And the town itself, with its polyglot army of miners struggling to extricate themselves from the stranglehold of the ruthless Anaconda Copper Mining Company, seems - like the couple’s fast-diminishing finances—on the verge of implosion.

Another great story from Doig
Revisado: 05-08-14
The historic details that are provided through the story about Butte and Anaconda's control of Montana are spot on. Having lived in Montana and travelled through Butte, it's easy to "see" the characters play out their lives in this tumultuous backdrop. I'm a long-time fan of Ivan Doig and pretty much enjoy anything he writes!
However, I did NOT enjoy the narrator of this audio version. His inflection was often off and there was little or no differentiation between characters. I found myself repeating the lines after him in what I thought would have been a much better cadence or emphasis, I was that unhappy with his performance. The story itself kept me listening but the narration was grating.

Historia
Two dead bodies changed the course of my life that fall. One of them I knew and the other I'd never laid eyes on until I saw him in the morgue. The first was a local PI of suspect reputation. He'd been gunned down near the beach at Santa Teresa. It looked like a robbery gone bad. The other was on the beach six weeks later. He'd been sleeping rough. Probably homeless. No identification. A slip of paper with Millhone's name and number was in his pants pocket. The coroner asked her to come to the morgue to see if she could ID him.

Better read than listened to
Revisado: 10-24-13
I did not enjoy the narrator of this book. Words were sometimes drawn out syllable by syllable in a pronunciation that was totally contrived. The ironic, sometimes irreverent, attitude of Kinsey was lost in the stilted portrayal of the narrator. I almost stopped listening but forced myself to continue because I've read all of the other Kinsey Millhone books. I'm sure that I would have enjoyed just reading the book rather than listening to this audio version.
