armature history filled with biases

Jared Cohen is a good story teller, not a balanced historian. His subtle swipes at Democrats throughout while giving glosses to Republicans begins to wear by the end. And the heroic tone gets tiresome. Plus, in the name of giving each president roughly the same amount of space, he wearingly goes on and on about George W. Bush's painting, since there's not much else to write about.

delightful if biased mini-biographies

The short, 30-minute biographies are a fun, informative listen, but probably not complete or balanced. The entry on Frost, whom I know best, is obviously taken only from Frost's authorized biography by Thompson, which paints him as an ogre because the biographer famously came to loathe Frost as they competed for the same woman's affection, and disgust is reflected in Engel's take, which isn't informed by later, more balanced treatments.. So Engel, despite his boasted Ph.D., is not the most thorough scholar. Still, they are educational and entertaining and get you thinking.

It had been bone-dry for months, and a recent string of blazes had nearly outstripped the fire department’s already scant resources. Then, on October 8, a minor fire broke out in the barn of Irishwoman Kate Leary. A series of unfortunate mishaps and misunderstandings along with insufficient preparation and a high south-westerly wind combined to set the stage for an unmitigated catastrophe.

Wonderful in describing the fire itself and the politics immediately following it. Becomes too exultant later on when I wanted analysis.

Guy de Maupassant is widely regarded as the father of the modern short story. As his 13 volumes of short stories attest, he was a prolific writer of this form. He had a simple, efficient style of writing and, like Anton Chekhov, found inspiration for his stories in the day-to-day lives of characters, in which their hidden natures are often revealed. Many of his works also centered on the Franco-Prussian War, in which he served.

Incredibly, this collection of "entire original stories by Maupassant" does not include "The Horla," one of his most famous, one that has inspired numerous authors and adaptations. It does include the travelogue short story "The Trip of the Horla," which is entirely a different story.
