Resilience beyond belief! Challenge yourself with this treasure! Self help is an understatement!
Revisado: 04-21-25
I’ve been challenged by this book to get up, dust myself off and chart a new path toward Onesome (wholeness)!
Regina has created a memoir that is vulnerable, transparent and often gut wrenching! But the details that she shares of her marriage and childhood are not for the sake of salaciousness, but to weave a tale of understanding that gets the reader to a decided end of joy! As you walk with her through the highs and lows in her life - whether you can relate to the trauma or not - everyone will relate to her overcoming attitude, forward motion, and never letting something happen to you without growing stronger from it! It is a beautiful story of continuous resilience while being a reminder to us all that we have value and deserve love just because God said it is so!

I fell in love with these people!
Revisado: 12-29-24
I love the detailed character development. Tragedy loves life! But happy endings are a must! I did abhor the grace given to Adam while the “home wrecker” was treated as literal demon spawn! He broke his vows… not her.

Historia
It's been over a decade since Nora left her hometown of Scupper Island, Maine, and very seldom looked back. She's carved out a successful life in Boston, where no one knows her as the awkward girl with the delinquent sister and the dad who left, but a not-as-dramatic-as-it-sounds brush with death has her taking stock of her life. Inspired to reconnect with her prickly mother and snarky teenage niece, Nora returns home for the summer, where she's forced to face the people she's spent the last ten years trying to avoid.

I happened upon this book by Audible suggestion and I’m so grateful. Each character and situation was sooo well crafted and relatable that I’ve been swept up in listening for 2 days straight! I want to live in a houseboat on some island in Maine now!

The gift of a Holiday Romance!
Revisado: 12-14-24
This book started out a bit familiar and turned into an engaging and really sweetly woven tale of family, adventure, and stepping outside of the traditional to take a chance on love!
I absolutely loved that the Black female protagonist was desirable and winning! The characters were so well developed that I know I’ll be thinking of them throughout the holidays! Thanks for this lovely gift Jayne!

After the Civil War, the pillars of Black Republicanism were a balanced critique of both political parties, civil rights for all Americans, reinventing an economy based on exploitation, and, most importantly, building thriving Black communities. How did Black Republicanism devolve from revolutionaries like Frederick Douglass to the puppets in the Trump era?

Your myopic view of Booker T is troubling.
Revisado: 02-03-24
I’ve not finished your book but Chapter 3: Montgomery & Washington has me troubled! Your myopic view of Dr. Washington is problematic. The myopic view leaves out the obvious fact that Booker T was a college president in the Deep South! He had the responsibility and trust for FIRST protecting and then educating these ambitious young scholars! You never mentioned how many times buildings on Tuskegee’s campus were burned to the ground. I challenge you to visit the archives on campus and read his letters and notes and understand that he had to do what he needed to keep the students safe while he did anything but teach them to ‘stay poor’! His first responsibility was to those students’ parents and the students. I’m pretty sure Carnegie gave money to every institution around! I think we actually get to look at Washington’s legacy - of which I am a proud part of and my grandson will be also! W.E.B Dubois… we honor his legacy through his writings… Booker T.’s are tangible!
It’s the same argument that Martin & Malcom disagreed on… Martin was in the south trying to lead change and KEEP PEOPLE SAFE… while Malcolm was in Harlem making great speeches with no strategy towards legislative change and overall reform.
It’s the difference between being in the game and shouting from the bench… you’re both on the same team and in the same fight but your perspectives are vastly different!

Revisado: 12-09-23
I love this series! ‘Who dunnit’ is my favorite genre of murder mysteries! The characters and settings are so true-to-life accurately depicting Black culture! I love a whole mystery involving Black women’s hair! Brilliant! The DMV & PG County as the backdrop is fascinating! I didn’t enjoy this book as much as the others due to the narration. The other narrator was fun and funny… this sounded like a bad read at times.
Overall a suspenseful and funny getaway into a world of possibilities of who dunnit!🥰🥰🥰

Jemele Hill’s world came crashing down when she called President Trump a “white supremacist”; the White House wanted her fired from ESPN, and she was deluged with death threats. But Hill had faced tougher adversaries growing up in Detroit than a tweeting president. Beneath the exterior of one of the most recognizable journalists in America was a need—a calling—to break her family’s cycle of intergenerational trauma.

I had a visceral reaction to this book because of the familiarity of the characters, locations, situations and raw emotions that occur when life gets complicated! It felt like a warm but scratchy blanket that you need but it’s just uncomfortable enough to want to take it off... and when you put it down at the end... you miss it! Time for a re-listen! Bravo Tayari!

Historia
At least one-third of the people we know are introverts. They are the ones who prefer listening to speaking; who innovate and create but dislike self-promotion; who favor working on their own over working in teams. It is to introverts—Rosa Parks, Chopin, Dr. Seuss, Steve Wozniak—that we owe many of the great contributions to society.

From a talkers point of view...
Revisado: 09-30-15
This book was life transformative for me! And I'm a quintessential extrovert! But I graced with the pleasure of raising an introverted daughter who is introspective, cooperative, a deep thinker and very much a leader. She is in her freshman year of college and I wish she would have finished this book with me this summer....but even more I wish this book had existed 10 years ago when I was always coaxing her brilliance onto center stage! Some motherly instinct took over around the teenage years and I learned to encourage yet shield her from the other wolves and she blossomed and lead her junior & senior year classes. Was admired and the glue in her 'squad' (friend group) and although she's having to do it all over again in a very competitive college arena... I know from her tweets that she's establishing herself!
A tweet from her:
Me: internally overthinking every aspect of my life.
Someone: wow girl ur so chill!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! for this book from this extrovert and from the introverts in my life whom you've validated their existence!
