Historia
For the last 100,000 years, we Sapiens have accumulated enormous power. But despite all our discoveries, inventions, and conquests, we now find ourselves in an existential crisis. The world is on the verge of ecological collapse. Misinformation abounds. And we are rushing headlong into the age of AI—a new information network that threatens to annihilate us. For all that we have accomplished, why are we so self-destructive? Nexus looks through the long lens of human history to consider how the flow of information has shaped us, and our world.

Underwhelming
Revisado: 09-16-24
I love Yuval Noah Harari's work, but this work seems a bit disappointing, given the quality of Sapiens and Homo Deus. It's a bit disorganized and the first part, which deals with the history of human networks, seems a bit disorganized from the latter part, which deals with the risk of AI. Unnecessarily long and I don't see the novelty, given how the risks of AI have been discussed in detail in books such as Super Intelligence, by Nick Bostrom.

Historia

Historia
It is astonishing that Simón Bolívar, the great Liberator of South America, is not better known in the United States. He freed six countries from Spanish rule, traveled more than 75,000 miles on horseback to do so, and became the greatest figure in Latin American history. His life is epic, heroic, straight out of Hollywood: he fought battle after battle in punishing terrain, forged uncertain coalitions of competing forces and races, lost his beautiful wife soon after they married and died relatively young, uncertain whether his achievements would endure.

Revisado: 12-31-23
Bolívar, arguably the most important Latin American in history, is well represented in Marie Arana's wonderful biography. Here we witness Bolívar's complexities and contradictions. He's not just a legendary figure, but a man with flaws and doubts. Nevertheless, what he achieved is epic and history will rightfully recognize it for centuries to come.

Historia
The Strange Death of Europe is a highly personal account of a continent and culture caught in the act of suicide. Declining birth rates, mass immigration, and cultivated self-distrust and self-hatred have come together to make Europeans unable to argue for themselves and incapable of resisting their own comprehensive alteration as a society and an eventual end.

Revisado: 12-24-23
This book is as relevant as always. Europe is allowing muslims, a group of people that do not assimilate, to change societal and cultural structures that have been in place for centuries. The current cycle of terrorism and religious extremism is a cautionary tale for the US and other developed countries.

Historia

Historia
An entertaining and revealing look at the science behind the emotion of disgust. Disgust originated to prevent us from eating poisonous food, but this simple safety mechanism has since evolved into a uniquely human emotion that dictates how we treat others, shapes our cultural norms, and even has implications for our mental and physical health.

Historia
People are now exposed to more information than ever before, provided both by technology and by increasing access to every level of education. These societal gains, however, have also helped fuel a surge in narcissistic and misguided intellectual egalitarianism that has crippled informed debates on any number of issues. Today, everyone knows everything and all voices demand to be taken with equal seriousness, and any claim to the contrary is dismissed as undemocratic elitism.

Excellent reflecfion on the demise of expertise
Revisado: 11-08-23
Nichols' book illustrates how the US has gone downhill since people stopped respecting expert opinion. As the author puts it, all votes are worth the same in a democracy, but not all opinions are worth the same. We need experts to make sense of a changing and complicated world and "doing your own research" is completely insufficient.

Historia
Robert Sapolsky’s Behave, his now classic account of why humans do good and why they do bad, pointed toward an unsettling conclusion: We may not grasp the precise marriage of nature and nurture that creates the physics and chemistry at the base of human behavior, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. Now, in Determined, Sapolsky takes his argument all the way, mounting a brilliant (and in his inimitable way, delightful) full-frontal assault on the pleasant fantasy that there is some separate self telling our biology what to do.

Excellent scientific evidence against free will
Revisado: 11-04-23
For those of us who follow Sam Harris, the non-existence of free will is certainly not novel. What is new, however, is the scientific rigor and deep thinking that went into writing this magnificent book. Professor Sapolsky, a well-renowned authority in his discipline, has outdone himself with timely work.
In the current world in which the majority tends to judge other's appearance, success and preferences as if they are solely of their own making, we need for someone authoritative to reminds us that we didn't make up ourselves. We are the ongoing product of a very long sequence of causes and consequences that goes all the way back to the Big Bang. I hope that humanity will someday come to embrace this idea as something as obvious as the fact that the Earth is round or that we descended from other apes.

Discover magazine recently called Richard Dawkins "Darwin's Rottweiler" for his fierce and effective defense of evolution. Prospect magazine voted him among the top three public intellectuals in the world (along with Umberto Eco and Noam Chomsky). Now Dawkins turns his considerable intellect on religion, denouncing its faulty logic and the suffering it causes.
