Historia
Charles Dickens is not feeling the Christmas spirit. His newest book is an utter flop, the critics have turned against him, relatives near and far hound him for money. While his wife plans a lavish holiday party for their ever-expanding family and circle of friends, Dickens has visions of the poor house. But when his publishers try to blackmail him into writing a Christmas book to save them all from financial ruin, he refuses. And a serious bout of writer's block sets in.

ok.
Revisado: 12-13-23
Nice, imaginative Christmas story. Beyond that, I don't think it remotely achieves the complexity of Dicken's generally reported trepidation and frustration with writing the story. Unfortunate, it's a backstory I would love to hear. This is more of a made-for-tv script to me. Would not purchase it again.
Narration is excellent.

Why Honor Matters

Historia
To the modern mind, the idea of honor is outdated, sexist, and barbaric. It evokes Hamilton and Burr and pistols at dawn, not visions of a well-organized society. But for philosopher Tamler Sommers, a sense of honor is essential to living moral lives. In Why Honor Matters, Sommers argues that our collective rejection of honor has come at great cost. Reliant only on Enlightenment liberalism, the United States has become the home of the cowardly, the shameless, the selfish, and the alienated. Properly channeled, honor encourages virtues like courage, integrity, and solidarity.

pretty good listen. Many good points, A few chapters dragged (7 was the worst, repetition). Definitely needed a professional narrator though. Too bad.

What does it mean for someone to be an asshole? The answer is not obvious, despite the fact that we are often personally stuck dealing with people for whom there is no better name. Try as we might to avoid them, assholes are found everywhere - at work, at home, on the road, and in the public sphere. Encountering one causes great difficulty and personal strain, especially because we often cannot understand why exactly someone should be acting like that.

not so much.
Revisado: 04-26-23
Aside from stating the obvious- Pointing out traits that identify people in this category- The most noteworthy thing about this book appears to be how many times the author can use the word "asshole." I was legitimately looking forward to hearing someone identify coping strategies for co-workers, maybe even resolution. Unfortunately, this eventually just reminded me of when children discover the novelty of profanity. Guess I'll keep looking for enlightenment.

not so much for gals over 40
Revisado: 04-24-23
My daughters alerted me to this author, book & podcast. I'm a retired Navy mechanic with 2 grown daughters, so I have infinite respect for anyone taking up the fight to empower women. That said-there are a multitude of senior women who find ourselves battling against the constraints of our income earning capabilities AND societal gender (and age) assumptions. My husband & I had a 20 year term policy which was very helpful when he passed on. I recently converted mine before it expired to a permanent life policy. Much pricier, but it is permanent & will pay out to our kids when I pass. We didn't invest in other alternatives extensively, so I personally consider it to be a good alternative to trying to get investments at this late stage of life. Costs about $300+ per month.
And yes, I would agree that investment interest accruing life insurance is a total scam and complete crap. Thanks for your podcasts and books, love to see younger women get knowledge and crash through that ceiling.
Take care.

Historia
This book is written by someone who spent the first half of his life as a nonbeliever. During his early years, the author contracted arthritis and suffered it for 10 years. Then he met his spiritual teacher, who cured him in 60 seconds flat! The minute that happened, his life changed. The second half of his life was devoted to practice, philosophy and philanthropy. His learnings, which are the secrets of the spiritual path, have been guardedly kept close to his chest.

Bleak.

Comprehensive, well written and thorough explanation. Objective and to the point.
Offers little hope for redemption. Your very nature as a human predisposes you to failure. That ill thought you just had about the road rage guy who cut you off on the interstate; ....negative Karma. Thich Nat Hanhs writings are more hopeful. Good luck.

Richard Dawkins' brilliant reformulation of the theory of natural selection has the rare distinction of having provoked as much excitement and interest outside the scientific community as within it. His theories have helped change the whole nature of the study of social biology, and have forced thousands to rethink their beliefs about life.

Intriguing subject, wildly repetitive writing

Didn't finish. Tried to keep plowing forward, but the writing was very dry and redundant. Sounded like the author was most concerned with defending his ideas. Too bad, really an interesting topic.

Jean-Paul Sartre, a French philosopher, is perhaps the best known advocate of existentialism. In this view, no external authority gives life meaning: mankind is radically free and responsible. In every moment we choose ourselves, with no assurance that we have a continuing identity or power.

Historia
As one of the strategists behind the famous 2012 RNC “autopsy,” Miller conducts his own forensic study on the pungent carcass of the party he used to love, cutting into all the hubris, ambition, idiocy, desperation, and self-deception for everyone to see. In a bracingly honest reflection on both his own past work for the Republican Party and the contortions of his former peers in the GOP establishment, Miller draws a straight line between the actions of the 2000s GOP to the Republican political class's Trumpian takeover, including the horrors of January 6th.

Excellent storytelling, struggled to finish
Revisado: 10-11-22
Interesting writing style- to a point.
Unfortunately, the author insisted on telling the story with extreme sarcasm, tried way too hard to be funny at the expense of reader comprehension (yes, I DO have a college degree).
Probably could do very well as a stand-up comedian; should have considered that avenue as an outlet for the excess hyperbole.
Consequently, much of the literary objective was sacrificed to the smart-a** gods. Having to listen to a chapter multiple times isn't enjoyable.
Next time just relax & tell us what happened, sir.

In this provocative and inspiring audiobook, David Richo distills 30 years of experience as a therapist to explain the underlying roots of unhappiness - and the surprising secret to finding freedom and fulfillment. There are certain facts of life that we cannot change - the unavoidable "givens" of human existence: (1) everything changes and ends, (2) things do not always go according to plan, (3) life is not always fair, (4) pain is a part of life, and (5) people are not loving and loyal all the time.
