Historia
Julian the Apostate, nephew of Constantine the Great, was one of the brightest yet briefest lights in the history of the Roman Empire. A military genius on the level of Julius Caesar and Alexander the Great, a graceful and persuasive essayist, and a philosopher devoted to worshipping the gods of Hellenism, he became embroiled in a fierce intellectual war with Christianity that provoked his murder at the age of thirty-two, only four years into his brilliantly humane and compassionate reign.

phenomenal & surprisingly novel!
Revisado: 04-16-23
as someone who's been studying antiquity, hellenism and late antiquity for over 30 years, I found this extremely refreshing. The level of novelty in this book has been fun & surprising. I've heard the rumors of the Christian assassination of Julian of which I am nearly completely convinced of... wow, what a different world it would have been otherwise....

Historia
Here is an impassioned plea for reason in a world divided by faith. This important and timely work delivers a startling analysis of the clash of faith and reason in today's world. Harris offers a vivid historical tour of mankind's willingness to suspend reason in favor of religious beliefs, even when those beliefs are used to justify harmful behavior and sometimes heinous crimes.

great overall but a bit of an apologist for....the tyranny of the Israeli government against the palestinians. this was a major blind spot in this book, aside from that it's mostly quite brilliant.

Historia
Most books about the history of humanity pursue either a historical or a biological approach, but Dr. Yuval Noah Harari breaks the mold with this highly original book. From examining the role evolving humans have played in the global ecosystem to charting the rise of empires, Sapiens integrates history and science to reconsider accepted narratives, connect past developments with contemporary concerns, and examine specific events within the context of larger ideas.

Historia
The story of the Roman Republic is the greatest epic in human history. Seen in the long perspective of time, it seems too fantastic to be real. From her modest beginnings as a convenient fording place on the Tiber to her eventual destiny as the mistress of the Mediterranean, Rome offers a strange tale of fate, sacrifice, and indomitable willpower. The stern realities of war shaped Rome's policies from the very beginning.

OK aside from the stuffy, snarky & hypocritical...
Revisado: 10-24-18
Tgis was OK aside from the stuffy, snarky, pompous and if course hypocritical Christian views on many things. The writer was far too busy injecting his own biased brainwashed perspectives vs just telling the story...also called 'judgement". The narrator really drove this view home, perfect accompaniment to these views...
