Historia
In this honest, layered and unforgettable book that alternates between storytelling and her own poetry, Pamela Anderson breaks the mold of the celebrity memoir while taking back the tale that has been crafted about her. Her blond bombshell image was ubiquitous in the 1990s. Discovered in the stands of a football game, she was immediately rocket launched into fame, becoming Playboy’s favorite cover girl and an emblem of Hollywood glamour and sexuality. But what happens when you lose grip on your own life—and the image the notoriety machine creates for you is not who you really are?

Really enjoyed learning more about her life, her thoughts, and who she is beyond Baywatch. What an interesting and thoughtful human, and fantastic writer. Great quotes, as well.

Historia
Recruited as a codebreaker of enemy ciphers, ex-debutante Osla Kendall spends her days translating Axis military messages and her nights reading mystery novels. When Osla gets her hands on Agatha Christie's most recent work, N or M?, a mysterious signal within its pages catches her eye, and she and her eccentric book club get in touch with the famous but reclusive writer. Osla's outreach is a welcome distraction for Agatha, who feels restless and underestimated toiling away in a London pharmacy.

Story didn’t take off really. I was excited knowing how much I like the author and Agatha Christie, but I didn’t feel like I actually learned about her contributions.

In August 2006, the International Astronomical Union voted Pluto out of planethood. Far from the sun, tiny, and eccentric in orbit, it's a wonder Pluto has any fans. Yet during the mounting debate over Pluto's status, Americans rallied behind the extraterrestrial underdog.

Very self aggrandizing, not enough about Pluto
Revisado: 06-04-24
I was really hoping to learn more about Pluto. While learning when and why it was demoted to dwarf planet was interesting enough as a part of the story, I didn’t feel like I learned as much as I’d hoped about actual Pluto. It felt like A LOT of justification for Neil DeGrasse Tyson, and not enough education of the subject.

Best friends Hero and Sunday are holidaying in New York when Sunday persuades the normally conservative Hero to don a siren-red wig and the persona of Lola, a do-anything-anywhere-anytime trapeze artist. Disguised as Lola, Hero crosses paths - and a whole lot more - with gorgeous Oscar. Sparks fly, but Hero can't admit to Oscar that she's not who he thinks she is.

Absolutely awful. Abusive behavior is not romantic
Revisado: 04-18-24
Wow this was truly terrible. I'll grant that while there were a few entertaining moments, it did not in any way outweigh the abhorrent behaviors of some of the characters. Stalking and gaslighting are not attractive qualities. Really gross how much abusive behavior was celebrated as "romantic." The portrayal of LGBTQ characters leaned heavily into over-the-top stereotypes, and felt insulting. Just soooo bad. Regretting now that I bothered to finish this.

Good mystery with a pleasant twist, complete with the usual antics of small town Cotswolds life, a will-they-won’t-they romance, and lots of rich characters. Enjoyed getting some backstory

Historia
Like many well-to-do Upper East Siders over the age of 65, esteemed art appraiser Percival Skinner had planned to spend his retirement living off his savings. But a market correction has left him living below his prior means. One day he’s visited by a dapper fixer in search of a famous work by a Renaissance master. Skinner knows the work well: The original was owned by his ancestor, and was passed down through his family over the generations. If, as an intermediary, he can coordinate a sale, a small fortune awaits. Problem is, he might not be the only one on the make.

After Jane Austen's earliest known writings, she began a more serious work, Lady Susan, in 1793 or 1794. It is a short, epistolary novel that portrays a woman bent on the exercise of her own powerful mind and personality to the point of social self-destruction.

Terrible narration, accents were all over the place
Revisado: 11-08-23
Half the time the characters were given Southern accents and half a bad attempt at midlands or Yorkshire accents. Dreadful.
All of the tongue-in-cheek aspects of this novel are lost to poor narration.

Piña coladas. Mojitos. Hurricanes. Daiquiris. Mai tais. Nothing makes a vacation like one of these delightful rum drinks, right? But whether blended with ice and fruit or sipped neatly from a glass tumbler, this sweet and fiery spirit brings with it a fascinating, complicated history that stretches back to colonial times of the 17th century in the Caribbean.

Interesting read, weird narration
Revisado: 10-07-23
Really enjoyed the topic. This was informative and interesting, tying in many well-known US historical events into their relationships with rum. (Some may have been a stretch of the truth)
The narrator, however, had a thoroughly bizarre way of reading some words. I don’t think it’s an ESL or an accent thing. I think he just says some words in a odd way, which I found distracting. I also found it weird that although this is supposed to be a professor narrating on a subject they are meant to be well-versed in, much of his reading felt like the first time he’d ever seen or read these words. Just…weird.

Incredibly compelling story that felt real
Revisado: 04-04-23
I laughed, I cried, I was angry, I was shocked. Although I know this is fiction, it felt like it was the TRUE story for any number of actors and actresses throughout film history who had to claw and scrape and hide themselves just to survive and succeed. I want faux biographies of ALL the characters now. Brilliant writing, funny, and believable.
