 Ginevra is a 12-year-old bread maker in the French royal palaces. After she is brutally beaten for being Italian, she is rescued by Catherine De Medici, the future Queen of France, who decides the intelligent girl will be trained as an astrologer for the royal children. With the queen's favor comes the opportunity to earn independence, wealth, and security, and respect, which Ginevra craves. However, under French law, so long as her father lives, she must obey him and wants only to see her married with a man to protect her. Ginevra appeals to the queen, who can do nothing to circumvent her father's decision. Ginevra is forced to sacrifice her dreams and run the hotel her husband has bought in one of Paris's worst slums. She refuses to tolerate this and begins to devise a daring plan to take back her life and regain the queen's favor.
