About Bahni Turpin

Bahni Turpin has been picking bold, groundbreaking titles–such as The Help and The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks–throughout her career, but these past two years stand out for her with phenomenal work on some amazing titles that have garnered her even more acclaim and new fans. In 2016 Turpin narrated books such as The Feminist Fight Club, the part manual/part manifesto guide to workplace sexism; The Underground Railroad, an Oprah Book Club selection; Dust Tracks on a Road, Zora Neal Hurston’s biography; and Sister of Mine, an imagined Civil War-era take on the family drama, for which she won an Audie award. The totality of her work in 2016 made her our choice for the 2016 Narrator of the Year.

And then came The Hate U Give, Angie Thomas’s 2017 debut novel that jumps into the current conversation around social justice through the eyes of a special young African-American girl named Starr as she deals with the death of her friend at the hands of a white police officer. Turpin’s embodiment of characters that span a wide range of ages and cultural backgrounds is uncanny, and helps to further pull you into the author’s world and drive home all of the pain and emotion they are carrying.

Turpin is also a stage and screen actor, appearing on shows like Criminal Minds, and is a member of the Cornerstone Theater company. Among her many other non-acting pursuits, she’s a longtime yoga instructor.
