See them at: http://www.artpal.com/irispress My first bicycle, age 4, was a Christmas present for my sister, but she was more cautious than I, so she was just as happy when I took it over. I rode often to my nearby elementary school. At age 7, we moved to an area with busy streets, so I had to give it up. My sister and I took up Scottish dancing and I branched off into ballet. Then came college and my art school days in Ann Arbor, an inspirational town. Art became permanently ingrained in my thinking. Between text and pictures, there was so much to learn! I always loved books. Years later, back in California, I was pursuing my life's work, teaching children with hearing loss. Special education is known as a "burn out" profession, so summer breaks of bicycle racing helped. As much as I enjoyed racing myself, this fast sport became attached to my curiosity as to how successful I might be at stopping the fast-and-furious action, most notably on the San Diego Velodrome. That fascination never left me. The idea of graduate school nagged as I became interested in educational technology and the production of educational materials for special purposes. This lead me to the University of Washington and two new professors who understood my desire to match visuals to cognitive psychology. Mom and pop met there, and there was a velodrome close by. While I fought hard to deliver improved educations for my students. There was so much to do for them in my During the summers I took a much needed break to concentrate on the challenge of getting some new bicycle race photos. If I got a few good ones, I was happy. I learned a lot about this specialized sport over the years, watching and listening to top riders and their support crews. I've been photographing bicycle racing on the track since 1978. It's always a thrill to try to catch the F-A-S-T action of riders, elbow to elbow, moving at over 40 miles an hour a few feet from spectators. Bicycle track racing is a great sport. Most newbies to the sport don't have to watch is long to shout "This is the most exciting thing I've ever seen!". So, my interests and activities are diverse, but never stop being interesting.
