Philip and Mary Landrigan are spouses and colleagues. They have been married for 51 years, and they have three children and seven grandchildren. They live outside of New York City in Westchester County, New York. Philip is a pediatrician and a specialist in preventive medicine and environmental health. He graduated from Boston College and Harvard Medical School, completed his clinical training at Boston Children’s Hospital and trained in preventive medicine at the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta. He is now the Dean for Global Health and a Professor of Pediatrics and Preventive Medicine in the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. For nearly 40 years he has been a leader in protecting children against environmental toxins. This is Philip’s tenth book and the second that that he has written with Mary. Mary is a public health educator. She also graduated from Boston College, where she met Philip, and she completed her graduate studies at Xavier University in Cincinnati. She served for 25 years as a public health educator in the Westchester County Department of Health. Philip and Mary wrote this book because they are very concerned about children's exposures today to thousands of environmental toxins. These hazards are found in everyday products. We are all in contact with them. Many are linked to disease in children. Parents are worried about environmental toxins, but they are very busy and are overwhelmed by conflicting information. The purpose of this book is to cut through that confusion and provide clear, practical guidance to parents, grandparents, teachers and all who care about children. The book is full of practical, down-to-earth information about environmental toxins. It provides blueprints showing step-by-step how to safeguard children against lead, air pollution, pesticides, chemicals in plastics and many others. The book brings clarity to a complex and often frightening subject. It gives parents knowledge, and it provides reassurance. Parents have great power to protect their children against environmental toxins. They can safeguard their children at home, in their schools and communities, and in the broader society. But if parents are to be successful, they need knowledge. That is why Philip and Mary wrote this book – to empower parents, grandparents and teachers with the information that they need to safeguard their children’s health against environmental toxins and to protect their future. Philip and Mary dedicated this book to their children - Mary and Jacob, Chris and Clare, Liz and Raphael; to their grandchildren – Jack, Ryan, Mary Katya, Sara, Gabriel, Aelish and Isaac; and to their children’s children.
