Nemat (Minouche) Shafik is a leading economist whose career has straddled public policy and academia. She was appointed as the Director of the London School of Economics and Political Science in September 2017. After completing her BA at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, her MSc at LSE and her DPhil at Oxford University, she became, at the age of 36, the youngest Vice President in the history of the World Bank. She taught at Georgetown University and the Wharton Business School. She later served as the Permanent Secretary of the UK's Department for International Development, Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, and as Deputy Governor of the Bank of England, where she was a member of the monetary, financial and prudential policy committees and was responsible for the Bank's balance sheet of over £500 billion. Minouche has served on and chaired numerous boards and currently serves as Deputy Chair of the Trustees of the British Museum, the Supervisory Board of Siemens, and the Council of the Institute of Fiscal Studies. She is an Honorary Fellow of St Antony's College, an Honorary Bencher of the Middle Temple and has received numerous honorary doctorates. She was made a Dame Commander in the Queen's Birthday Honours List in 2015 and a cross-bench peer in the House of Lords in 2020.
