Mary Jo Ignoffo's passion for history and story-telling has led her to author six books that provide in-depth and original looks at fascinating moments in history. Her latest, La Verdad: A Witness to the Salvadoran Martyrs (2014) fuses oral history interviews with historical commentary to tell the story of a Salvadoran woman whose steadfast commitment to the truth changed history in both El Salvador and the United States. Ignoffo’s biography of the rifle heiress, Sarah Winchester, in the words of Gary Kurutz of the California State Library, “finally sets the record straight on one of the most fascinating and misunderstood women in California history.” It dispels the convoluted mythology that has surrounded the reclusive widow. Gold Rush Politics was the California State Senate’s commemorative book in honor of California’s Sesquicentennial. She has been interviewed for film documentaries including The El Salvador Incident (2015, Joe Goschy Productions) Changing Boundaries: the History of San Jose (2014, Norman Kline Productions); Sunnyvale Voices, a compilation of stories about the defense and agricultural industries in California; and Million Dollar Dirt (2003) about the demise of farmland in the San Francisco Bay Area. Ignoffo has worked as a preservation consultant in California, and contributed research to state, county, and city historic building surveys. Her work with historical museums includes curating more than ten installations at the California History Center (Cupertino), permanent and changing exhibits at Heritage Park Museum (Sunnyvale) and authoring an exhibit at the Los Altos History Museum (Los Altos). Ignoffo's articles or book reviews have appeared in the San Jose Mercury News, Santa Clara Magazine, The Californian, and California History. She recently retired from teaching history at De Anza College in Cupertino, California.
