About this listen

Jason Reinier fell in love with Mik Sanders the moment they met. After years of pining after his best friend, a single night of passion showed him Mik felt the same. Their future together seemed guaranteed until a painful truth tore them apart.

To escape the heartache of losing his best friend and lover at once, Jason accepted an offer overseas to play professional rugby. Mik remained, tethered to a life he neither expected nor wanted.

Eighteen years later, Jason has returned to face his former lover turned brother-in-law, while Mik plays the part of doting husband and father. The years of pain and resentment are no match for the heat both men still feel, and they enter into a forbidden affair—despite knowing from experience every decision has lasting consequences.

The emotion of this book was absolutely everything! I know many people steer away from some of the trope portrayed in this book but this book is the reason why I love venturing outside the comfort of the simple and clear, edging the line of what is right or wrong. The stories that make you look deeper into the why.
Rebecca Rathe did something amazing with these characters. The depth of who they are as people and the decisions they had to handle through the difficulty of life and all other things happening. What a freaking amazing book. I will be reading it again, soon.
the narration of this by Jake Bordeaux is nothing short of amazing. They way each of the characters have distinct voices and personalities that really embodies these characters so well. The emotion the drips through to my headphones had me glued to them through this whole audio book... maybe twice.

The most amazing ever

🎧 Audio Review:

Listening to the audiobook was my third time reading The Try Line, and Jake's performance absolutely wrecked me. I had to take NUMEROUS mental health pauses as I found myself sobbing as I lived through Mik and Jason's story again. Emotional moments that had already torn my heart to pieces were felt in my soul. I honestly didn't know if my heart would ever recover, but that HEA sure made up for the pain.

Honestly, Jake was meant to be the narrator for all of Rebecca Rathe's books. I highly recommend listening to the entire series!

📚 Story Review:

I absolutely loved this book! It is easily one of my top reads of the year, and it might even edge out Man On as my favorite of the Forbidden Goals series.

Do you know that feeling when you read a book that hits you so deeply that even thinking about it days later (or trying to write a review) still brings you to tears? This book did that to me. I was so emotionally invested in Mik and Jason's story that, even now, I feel the pain of all they lost and all got back.

My heart was put through its paces—from best friends to lovers, love to hate, and back to love again. There was so much angst and pining, and so much guilt.

The miscommunication trope is one of my least favorites, but the way Rebecca handled it here, as a believable reason the MMCs were torn apart and setting them up for a second-chance way down the line, made it worth the pain. I even forgave the cheating element, much preferring the MMCs to be together than Mik to be forced into a marriage with Janel (who I still feel is the true villain of the story).

The Try Line is a standalone MM sports romance that ends in a HEA.

HIGHLY recommended!

Thank you, Rebecca Rathe, for the audiobook!

Fantastic narration by Jake Bordeaux - i love his voice! His narration gave both characters distinct voices and I always knew who was speaking. And the way he reads the spicy bits - O M G - so hot!

The story - I absolutely loved this! childhood BFFs to lovers torn apart with second chance (and cheating?) - oh yeah, I ate it UP! This author writes some of my very favorite books and in this case, took one of my least fave tropes (pregnancy) along with one of my other least fave thing (OW/OM drama) and made it SO GOOD. Even the miscommunication trope was written so well here! Mik and Jason's story just hit so hard for me. The spice was freaking BLAZING and the emotions...oh wow, I cried so much for them. Throughout it all, though, I was rooting for them to find their way back to each other....and they do. I loved how supportive Jase is (I don't generally care for kids in books, either, but Jase is a star himself). I had little sympathy for Janel because she caused so much damage and while I may understand why, it doesn't excuse her behavior at all. I wish Mik had stood up for himself more and that Jason wasn't such a hothead, but them it wouldn't be the book that it is - and I loved this very much. Will definitely reread and relisten.

100% loved every minute of this!

This audiobook was tragic but very sweet. Its MC’s are much too concerned with outside opinions and expectations, and these concerns affect their lives for 18 long years. The sister/wife was difficult for me to empathize with, because she knew the entire time how much her brother loved his best friend, and insisted on marrying him anyway, spending the entirety of the marriage forcing him to fit her idea of a good spouse rather than accepting him for who he actually was. I recognize that a young pregnancy can be frightening (I was also a young mother), but knowingly taking the father into marriage just because of the pregnancy, knowing her brother was in love with him after they had already been broken up was a bit manipulative. It drove me nuts how both men were always so concerned with not wanting to upset her, when she gave two cats about how her controlling, manipulative behavior upset them. Also, when was this book written? There are plenty of very successful, socially respected people who have tats. It’s a bit of an archaic idea that people with tats are viewed as criminal based on their body art. Just saying.

Sweet second chance

Rebecca Rathe… what do you put in these books?!?! I always find my self saying I’m obsessed when it comes to anything Rebecca Rathe but…. It’s because she writes these beautifully, stunning, if a little broken.. men. And don’t get me started on how good the story’s are character development are!

Idk if I like the sister. She irritated me right off the bat but I think that’s because she knew. SHE KNEW. And she broke my boys up. I do appreciate her growth and how she had to let go and came to that decision by seeing the mistake she had made, first hand.

Jake Bordeaux is phenomenal!!! Enough said!!

Mik & Jason are my fav in the entire series. Jake's narration elevates them to a whole other level! 🖤🖤

In love!

If only....if only.....18 years delayed; but true love can't be denied. Lack of communication was of course the culprit in this title...it's just too darned bad it took 18 years for everything to come to light. But I wondered how Rathe would handle the realization to Janelle and Jase - I can say it was handled with grace. Janelle even gave a bittersweet send off to Mik and Jason.
Every title that I've listened to by Rebecca Rathe has delivered great stories and great solo performances by Jake Bordeaux. So far this one and book 2 are my absolute favorites. Looking forward to book 5!

5 Starz - I would listen again
