Publisher's summary

From the author of the blockbuster best seller The Game: a shockingly personal, surprisingly relatable, brutally honest memoir in which the celebrated dating expert confronts the greatest challenge he has ever faced: monogamy and fidelity.

Neil Strauss became famous to millions around the world as the author of The Game, a funny and slyly instructive account of how he transformed himself from a scrawny, insecure nerd into the ultraconfident, ultrasuccessful "pickup artist" known as Style. The book jump-started the international "seduction community" and made Strauss a household name - revered or notorious - among single men and women alike.

But the experience of writing The Game also transformed Strauss into a man who could have what every man wants: the ability to date - and/or have casual sex with - almost every woman he met. The results were heady, to be sure. But they also conditioned him to view the world as a kind of constant parade of women, sex, and opportunity - with intimacy and long-term commitment taking a backseat.

That is until he met the woman who forced him to choose between herself and the parade. The choice was not only difficult, it was wrenching. It forced him deep into his past, to confront not only the moral dimensions of his pickup lifestyle but also a wrenching mystery in his childhood that shaped the man he became. It sent him into extremes of behavior that exposed just how conflicted his life had become. And it made him question everything he knew about himself, and about the way men and women live with and without each other.

He would never be the same again.

Searingly honest, compulsively listenable, this new book may have the same effect on you.

Raw, honest, brave

I held Neil Strauss in contempt for a ling time because he championed the life of the pick-up artist.

This book has completely turned my negative thoughts around.

First, Strauss is a gifted story teller. His writing kept me engaged, even as he was relating stories and events that made me uncomfortable.

Second, he is both incredibly brave and extraordinarily generous to offer us this look inside his life. By telling his story, he has created an opportunity for so
many to face their demons and ultimately a find true love in their lives.

This was an extremely painful, though completely engaging, read for me - one that will be life-changing.

Thank you, Neil Strauss for being the catalyst to uncover my own history of enmeshment, abandonment fears and love addiction.

Thank you for your courage and your willingness to write about your personal struggle in such a raw and honest way.

I can'r recommend this book enough - I'd give it 10 stars if I could!

Absolutely Amazing!

This is a fantastic self-help book. Brilliantly written!! I couldn't put down the audio and got to do 16 hours of it in a matter of three days. Totally life-changing and helped me have a new outlook on relationships.
I also learn more about my own attachment style and I was happy to take a psychology test I realize that I have a secure attachment type.

Wise

Neil recounts the good, the bad, and the ugly of relationships. I just wish I had known these insights earlier.

Required reading for aspiring adults

First, huge respect to Neil Strauss for writing such a brutally honest book about himself. I only know him from The Game stuff and his podcast appearances. The Game brought me to a deeper understanding and capability in dating. But once I was able to succeed there I discovered I had very little interest in actually having one night stands and meaningless trysts. But... locked into long term relationships I felt restless and detached and looking for reasons to leave.

This book rips relationship patterns and possibilities down to their core in a way only Neil could pull off, by trial and error and asking the right questions. The questions we all have. Totally worth the listen/read. I’m ordering the paper version to have on hand for rereading and sharing with the crew. Thanks Neil, brave and admirable, and I hope your parents forgave you! Cheers...

I don't use the word masterpiece lightly

I started intensively working on myself a few years ago and the only thing that held me back from trying to be a pickup artist was severe emotional issues. As I've been working on my own childhood trauma, my therapist recommended this book. I'm so glad I started with this book instead of The Game. The author explores common male fantasies and can tell the reader why they aren't satisfying. Strauss's work is excellent both as a self development book but also as a piece of journalistic writing, exploring subcultures with lucid description that are rarely discussed, and when they are discussed, are either demonized or fetishized. The only other nonfiction book that I feel summons the depth of emotion, vivid symbolism, and utter humanity present in this book is Robert Caro's Passage of Power. This book may never be as lucrative as The Game because hookups are quick and glamorous while real self-improvement is slow and deeply uncomfortable, but this book is a masterpiece of a genre new to the 21st century: a prose gallery of the author's vulnerability and growth.

A modern & realistic "WHEN HARRY MET SALLY"

I love the neurotic, never ending, searching he went through; that put all the words to the emotions and ideas I have had in days past, and expanding them far beyond what I could have attempted. And maybe I can feel comfortable knowing I never needed too... thanks Neil

The title says it all

Enjoyed the book all the way. It picked my curiosity and obviously made me question my relationship standards... A must read for anyone who is in a relationship and is honestly interested and commited to make it better, make it what it should be, whichever way that it.
