Publisher's summary

Damen is a warrior hero to his people and the rightful heir to the throne of Akielos, but when his half brother seizes power, Damen is captured, stripped of his identity, and sent to serve the prince of an enemy nation as a pleasure slave.

Beautiful, manipulative and deadly, his new master, Prince Laurent, epitomizes the worst of the court at Vere. But in the lethal political web of the Veretian court, nothing is as it seems, and when Damen finds himself caught up in a play for the throne, he must work together with Laurent to survive and save his country.

For Damen, there is just one rule: never, ever reveal his true identity. Because the one man Damen needs is the one man who has more reason to hate him than anyone else.

Lots of build up for what's to come.

I've been wanting to read this trilogy for so long- I'm not sure why I held off on it but I'm glad I finally bit the bullet! This first book is mostly background and build up for what's to come, and it has me completely intrigued.
It's definitely graphic and made me uncomfortable in parts. I more than likely would have passed on this if it was a contemporary read, but I don't mind so much when it's an historical read. I just kept imagining it as similar to one of my favorite television series, Spartacus.
I kept wanting Damen to just blurt out who he was, but I understand why he couldn't- it was just frustrating! So it's on to the next one to see how things start to come together.

The narration was fine. I admit I was expecting there to be some kind of an accent so it was kind of surprising to hear plain ol' english being spoken. I think Joel Leslie would have done a great job performing this series, but you can't always get what you want.

Clor Me Intrigued

Okay...intense start but I'm curious where this is going to go. It is a quick listen and little time is wasted getting into things. Check the trigger warnings for sure but don't write it off so soon.

Audio issues

How could the performance have been better?

I had issues with the performance at times in that the narrator would suddenly get very quite so it became very hard to hear especially while driving on the highway over the holidays. I had to turn up the volume almost as high as it would go which is headache inducing. Otherwise besides it was hard at times to distinguish voices and the narrator also had a very bored cadence to his voice. I am hoping book 2 is better

Waited for so long

Would you listen to Captive Prince again? Why?

I've read and retread this series, listening to it is like a joy if discovery once more. Although I know what will happen, I'm still spellbound by the narration

What other book might you compare Captive Prince to and why?

Kate Sherwood "Sacrati" but only superficially, that is a great story and is one of my favourite but it doesn't have the length or depth of intrigue as this trilogy

Have you listened to any of Stephen Bel Davies’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No

Any additional comments?

I hope the small vignettes will also make the audible jump

On to the next one...

Yes, quite well done. The narrator of the audiobook was not for me, which was such a disappointment. (Stephen Bel Davies) Can't recall him doing anything that I've listened to before. Nevertheless I'll still be purchasing the next one...

As far as the story goes? It's everything you've heard and more.

A good buy

I'm a fan of the series, though book 1 is my least favorite, so I got this book mainly in the interests of completion. That being said, Stephen Bel Davies does an excellent job. His intonation took some time to get accustomed to, but his voicing is very good, and it's easy to tell who is speaking. He's also adept with the difficult names (I don't envy him having to say 'Laurent' every few seconds). If you like a good story told well, this audiobook is a worthwhile investment.

Interesting but not as good as the hype

This wasn’t as good and the politics wasn’t as sophisticated as I anticipated, but the story was interesting enough to hold my attention. I do want to know what’s gonna happen next and if/how the romance will develop between Laurent and Damen. The narrator and author both could have done better in telling the story.
